hi everybody,
my name is darren drew and married with 4 children and a plumber.
I have had a job offer from a company called Morton & Trotter in Calgary.
Has anybody had dealings with or taken the jouneyman plumbers exam. apparently i have to sit the exam within 180 days on arriving.
Is the best route for me to apply for a temp' work permit or go down the foreign workers route as i would like for us to move out there as a family [ together ].
All advice gratefully received as i am in limbo at wich way to turn.

Don't know the company, but are they offering you any assistance with the work permit? They might have an LMO prearranged.

Hi Darren, my husband is a plumber and also is going to work for 'trotter and morton', we are going out on a twp hopefully in sept, have you sent off all your qualifications to AIT to be assessed? you have to do this before you can even sit the redseal it costs $450, trotters will reimburse this when you pass and also nominate you for pnp which leads to pr, you can all move out together on a twp, you will be working for them straight away and they do a classroom session once a week too to help you get ready for the exam but you also have to read up and study all you can, i am sure that trotters would be expecting you to go out this way on a twp as they are wanting people asap, they seem a nice freindly firm and have been very helpful to us so far, any more questions ask away or pm me.

Technically you have 180 days from when you recieve positive response from AIT, temp and foreign worker programme is one and the same its the only route open to you in order to take this job offer now. Once qualified / licensed your company can sponsor you for PNP and then you apply for expedited PR. I went this route its very quick.

Hi, I hope you don't mind me asking but my husband is a fire alarm engineer/ electrician and is looking for work out in Canada. Did you just email various companies with your resume to see what happened? He has plenty of experience, he has been with the same company for 18 years since he qualified but we aren't sure how to look for work wisely.

Hi it says on the letter from AAIT that within 7 days of your arrival in Alberta you must submit your Alberta mailing address and exams are scheduled several weeks in advance and also that you have '180 DAYS AFTER ARRIVING IN ALBERTA' to challenge the theory eamination and obtain your certification.

Don't bother just emailing resumes - next to pointless to try and get work in Canada as Canadians like personal contact so you need to phone or visit.

Maybe things have changed at AAIT (I was assessed way back in 2006). It makes much more sense to start the clock when you have arrived here.

I beg to differ on that chief... I emailed almost all companies in my field of work and got responses from most of them, with a number of them leading to offers and subsequently the job I'm doing now.

I reckon it all depends on the actual job.

by way I lived in Calgary for 12 months back in 1982, visited to see friends 7 years ago, my god hasn't it got big, can't to get back

We have letter from AAIT and it advises that we have 12mths to get there and activate it, after that OH would have to re-apply for AAIT approval.
Runs in line with the LMO as that also says 12mths as well.

OH got offer off that firm, but we decided we liked another area, good luck and keep us posted..
