Default Air Canada want to close Halifax base

Love the comment on the one poster - Canada includes Nova Scotia
Halifax seems a strange choice to close, as it's the only base in Eastern Canada.
Worrying comments about the increase in airfares, especially as AC is the only option of flying from Halifax to UK in winter.

Hi there,
Have I got it right that Air Canada will be stopping ALL their flights to Halifax. Like you say, they're the only airline flying to NS in the winter. I also feel very sorry for all their employees about to lose their jobs or forced to move.

That's not how I read it - I thought they were just saying their base will close, i.e. flight attendants/pilots etc. can no longer be based out of Halifax - their home base, to where they start and end their working blocks, will not be Halifax. If Air Canada staff want to keep living in Halifax, they'll be reponsible for getting themselves to their start point aiport, and for their own getting-back-to-Halifax at the end of their shift blocks. I've known US airline staff who do that, it's not too costly with pass privileges but goodness knows what a flight commute would cost in Canada

no, they wont be stopping flights, want they want to do is close the base here, so all flight attendents will either loose their jobs or be relocated to other bases in Canada. The union claim this will mean more disruption to flights as crews have to be bought in from other base to service flights originating from Halifax.
It does seem a bit crazy that they are busy renovating the airport at the moment, yet AC want to close the base.
As to the doom and gloom, I think people should be aware of ALL the fact of life here so they can make informed decisions. I don't make the news, just read it and like to be aware of what is going on in a place I spend some of my time, rather than burying my head in the sand or twisting things around to make them sound better than they really are.

Nowt to do with stopping flights directly and all to do with where flight crews are based. Inevitably it'll disrupt flights when a new crew is needed (say the existing one runs out of time due to a mechanical fault delaying the aircraft) and now has to be flown in from Toronto or Montreal. It'll be even worse for us here in the far flung eastern reaches of Canada. At least you Haligonians can drive to your destinations!
