Re: Affordable Housing

These are the sorts of places one has to go to in Canada for affordable housing, generally the nice places people want to live are not affordable.

But of course affordable is different person to person, some people find Chilliwack, BC affordable, and others find Pitt Meadows affordable, or Maple Ridge but for others those places are downright expensive and not a place that they can afford.

I think there are a couple of snags. One is that remote housing tends not to be cheap and the other is that everything else costs a lot in remote places due to the difficulty and expense of getting it there.

In this Canada is far from unique. I imagine the same is true of the US, it certainly is of the UK. Generally there is a reason why houses are cheap - either no-one wants to live there or there are not enough jobs to be able to afford to eat once you are there. I can point you to places in Newfoundland where you could buy a house for $35k. Quite what you'd do for a living is another matter.

This is a point I keep meaning to make on the "Canada is expensive" thread in the Maple Leaf. Given that Canada is such a darn big country the Supply Chain for getting stuff to the remoter parts has a significant impact on price of goods. So fresh fruit & veg are more expensive here, in Newfoundland, than say, Vancouver or burbs because everything has to be shipped in and trucked across the Island. Once you get to the remoter Northern communities it's all much more so. $20 for a head of cauliflower etc. I think the logistics piece and the size of the country are points sometimes lost on those of us from a small, crowded island of the coast of Europe.;)

Thank you all for your input. It has confirmed what I was thinking. I have done a reccie of sorts already as the company flew me out there for interview. I think I may pass! Affordable yes, but not sure will be the right fit.

The US isn't bad, there are places with affordable housing that have jobs within a reasonable commute of a larger city.

They are larger population of course so that brings more opportunity and better selection and variety of places to live.
