Hi,
We rent near Van (Pitt Meadows) currently but are looking to move somehwere more affordable (wherever that may be) We are not city people and not a fan of Vancouver. Also find eveything so expensive.
I am fortunate that I am an experienced automation electrician so it doesn;t seem to difficult to find work, its just finding that area. I have been offered a job in Ontario which is an option at the moment but we need to review the area in more depth to see if it will be suitable for such a big move.
Any thoughts on smaller cities/towns??
Thanks

If anyone here can offer a quality response concerning Temiskaming Shores, I'll be quite surprised. That's a long way up.

I've been to Temiskaming, New Liskeard and Kirkland Lake but only visiting for a few days (my former mother-in-law was from there and wanted photos of the family burial plot etc),
They are really quite small and pretty far north! The city of Temiskaming Shores (amalgamation of 3 towns) had a total population of 10,400 in the Canada 2011 Census. . I quite liked New Liskeard, situated on the lake with a beach and a couple of pubs but I'm sure it's much different in the depths of winter to what it was like in summer. The locals at all 3 locations I found to be very friendly and helpful, if that's of any use to you! I stayed at the Waterfront Inn: http://www.waterfrontinn-ontario.com/ - of the towns in that area I much prefered NL.
I would definitely suggest a recce visit before committing yourselves.

That's what I love about BE, I'm always finding something new! Trust Siouxie to have actually been to the place
It's website looks nice, but I note that all of the pictures are taken in summer. It looks fantastic, but a winter recce might be a good plan...I'd never have ended up here if I'd visited in February

Looks gorgeous.
I lived in a remote place when I first came to Canada. But it wasn't that remote. I could get to Halifax in about 3 1/2 hours.
The thing that happens when you're an outsider is everybody knows your business...

It has it's merits (one of which is affordable housing
) but nothing would induce me to even visit in winter. I think I remember that lmartin's wife was brought up there so he might comment if he ever stumbles across this thread.

One summer (2007 IIRC), I had to travel several times by road from Toronto to Timmins and often stopped for a break from the driving at New Liskeard.

I like the small town feel up there, and it is cheap though I did hear real estate was going up due to mines reopening. Quite pleasant in the summer though I recall being woken up by a bear tearing down a screen door one night. The lakes are nice. It actually never felt horribly isolated. Airport in Timmins and the thrill of a day trip to Rouyn-Noranda... As you say though I wouldn't even visit in the winter. And they are long. And cold.
