He wants someone to advise him. I don't see anything wrong with that?

The future of education is safe in your hands.

There are areas of life where its better, there are areas where its not. Dont have too many preconceptions, but do your homework and be very clear as to the motivation you have for coming to Canada.

Other advice, go where you can get a decent job. Happy immigrants tend to be the ones fully employed. Everything else tends to stem from that. Cost of living and all that surely has been covered numerous times elsewhere.

I totally agree with this - we came with no particular expectations and prepared to take what came at us. We were very lucky with our timing (2004) - great exchange rate, high UK property market and low Canadian one - so we significantly improved our living arrangements. The cost of living stuff has been covered - car insurance and property taxes are the killers for us, but other stuff is cheaper (generally food - provided you don't insist on seeking out all the British brands you are used to). We live close to Toronto - about 20km to the West on the lakeshore. It is hot in the summer but lots of the neighbours have pools and we tend to gather around one of them with a beer (or two) after work and at weekends.
Throw yourself into the lifestyle and try not to reproduce the life you have in the UK, you won't be able to and you will miss out on the good stuff here. It is not perfect but has definitely been a great move for our family. Good luck - let us know how you get on.

Ermm... yes. Well, I live in Ontario and get driven indoors every evening at 6 pm by hoards of bloodthirsty mosquitoes. Gardening, dining and sipping a nice glass of wine outdoors in the evening is OUT OF THE QUESTION in my neighbourhood. Just warning you. Comparison to midges, well... I'm a polite Canadian, so will zip it!

sorry -- I had mentioned bugs before drilling down through the post.

Okay -- how about the three-to-five months of snow, ice, sleet and freezing rain? You know... outside of bug season... our lovely winter.

Fall, however, is gorgeous.

P.S. Don't forget to look into Ottawa if IT is your field.

She said three months of snow, ice, sleet and freezing rain.

That's about right around here. Late December to late March (with exceptions of course), but it's guaranteed for those three months.

I always thought that the seasonal differences was one of the best things about Southern Ontario and the Autumns are spectactular.
