Hi All

Just after a little info from British People who have married a Canadian. What sort of time line should we schedule for? We want to move Mid 2006 So is Mid 2005 about 12 months ok? or is 24 months still the norm even though my wife is Canadian.

Also, when I come to take my medical, I have no Know diseases, I am slightly overweight, is that viewed as bad as say, HIV or Diabetes??

What part of U.K are u from and what part of canada did u have in mind.

It shouldn't take u more than 6 months from what i've seen.

The medical from my understanding is very minimal for spoused sponsored people.
As long as u don't have a contagious disease such as T.B you;ll be ok.


It'll cost you 180 pounds in the U.K and u send that with th application

I'm from Leeds and we 1st thought about Vancouver, Its a great city but has become like London, Affordable living is way out in the suburbs and travel time is huge.

Having spent lots of time in Canada, We have choosen Alberta and more specific Lethbridge. Its a lovely place, not too much there but is expanding. Also its not too far away from Kananaskis, My fav golf course in the Canada.

It took us 8 months although we made a mistake on the form whick probably cost us about a month.

The medical is fine, a chest x-ray, not sure what that's for, test blood pressure and listen to your heart. Not sure about 'larger' people, as long as it looks like you're not going to going cast the health service anything anytime soon you should be OK.

Keep in mind that your visa will expire a year after your medical. Under spousal sponsership the medicals are done prior to sending off your application to hurry up the process. My wife has sponsered me. My medical was done on the 29th September 2003 and I received my visa around the middle of April this year. The visa expires this September 29th.

The medical itself is a full one including appropriate blood tests and examination by the doctor. A chest X-Ray is also required although I do understand that there is greater flexibility shown as regards the results of the medical for spousal sponsership.

Chest X ray is for signs of inactive TB. If TB has ever been an issue, spousal applications can be delayed.

I'm looking at sending in my application pretty soon too (my wife is Canadian -- from BC originally). I understand that spousal sponsorships are 'rushed' through the system and shouldn't take longer than 6 months if they're straightforward.

As another poster said, you take your medical up-front and you have 12 months from the date of the medical to travel.

WRT medical conditions, spousal sponsorships are subject to a medical waiver (see here for the definition of this). It may be worth your while doing a dry-run of the forms available here so you know what questions are asked and what proof to supply...

I am a type-1 diabetic (under VERY good control) and do not forsee any problems emigrating... Famous last words...

im canadian and my husband is british. we are currently living in the uk. we sent in our application at the end of january 2004 and received the PR Visa on the 19th of July 2004... so a total of about five and a half months. we went through an immigration consultant even though we had a straightforward case. and he informed us that spousal visa's from canadian citizens living outside of canada were indeed down to a six month waiting period.

my husband was also told when he had his medical that he was slightly overweight. the doctor informed him this wasnt a problem and just supplied the information for his benefit. we did the medical before applying (beginning of january)
