Question Advice for Someone new to this

Hi,
My wife and I are just starting out on the process of applying as skilled workers to Canada. We plan to settle in the GTA because my wife has an uncle, aunt and cousins there who are Canadian Citizens. We both live in Scotland where we were born and have British Citizenship(obviously).

On the canadian immigration website we took the test and got 76 points. We're also learning french to try to get an extra 2 points just to be sure. - When do they test our french, i.e. how long do we have to get up to the basic level?

We don't have the minimum amount of money required saved right now (we just payed for a wedding) but will do by the time we go. In addition we will be selling our house so we will be taking significantly more money than the minimum. Do we need to prove savings of the minumum amount before submitting our application (if yes how do we prove this) and then how do we show that we will have a lot more by the time we are ready to fly out?

My wife's uncle has already stated that we can stay with him when we arrive until we get jobs and settled etc, does this help and can we do anything to prove this to the immigration officers?

Finally, and this is probably the oldest ever question, do we need to hire an immigration layer to give us the best chance of approval or can we do it ourselves. We're both university Grads and pretty savvy.

Look forward to receiving your answers.

Hi, also forgot to ask,
does a speading ticket count against you in the police search?

If you blew over .08 alcohol you will be inadmissible to Canada. With a DUI it is
best to consult with either a lawyer or consultant before submitting an application
our attempting to enter Canada as a visitor.

How so PMM...I've not seen anything in the CIC website on the subject saying this
will be a reason for refusal...and I've checked with the police authorities here in
the UK and they don't consider it a criminal conviction which I can understand
would have had a negative effect on my application. Any explanation or details
would be great

Thanks Scott

It might. Drunk driving in Canada is a crime rather than a traffic violation like it
is in the UK. I would go to Pitt Street in Glasgow and have them run a background
check on yourself to see if they can find it. If it doesn't show up I wouldn't
mention it.
