Advice needed?

Hi all,
I will find out next week if my LMO has been granted and my employer has told me I just need my hand tools ( I am a Plumber ). If not I can get tools on his account and pay him back.
Has anyone ever took tools on the aircraft as excess luggage? Surely there will be charges for weight?
Nigel.

Hi there
Its no problem taking tools on the plane but it will depend on your airline what its going to cost you. I think I read on Globespans site that you can book excess baggage in advance for £15 per 10kg up to a total of 50kg total checked baggage. Carriers like BA and Air Canada are likely to be in the region of £15 a kilo.
Have you worked out what your tools weigh roughly?
Cheers
Tom

Hi mate,
Will have to weigh them, I were thinking of flying with Airtransat.
What do you suggest?

Some employers will do this, but not all. It is unlikely they will for a new employee. Of course, you can easily buy all the tools you need here, probably a lot cheaper than in the UK. However, most tradesmen I speak to think European and Japanese hand tools are superior to North American ones. If I were you I would bring at least a set of essential tools to get you going, and/or your favorite ones.

Air Transat charge £5/kilo for excess but if its codeshare with Thomas Cook then it would be £8/kilo.
Once you know the rough weight of the tools you want to take I would shop around based on excess charges.
globespan seem to have the best excess deal but there are plenty of posts on here that might make you think twice about flying with them.
It might be worth bearing in mind as well that you might be required to pay tax or duty on tools intended for business. Its not something i can attest to personally but i am sure I have read other posts here that indicate tools for business are not exempt from import tax.
Cheers
