Default Advice on finding work before we land

Hi everyone,

Have checked Wiki already but thought I would ask if anyone has any advice they might offer about finding Welding work before we finally land in Canada.
Have been sending off resumes and cover letters but no-one replys back.

I know hubby would need redseal for in Alberta but the other provinces don't specify this although he is happy to sit any weld test.

Could really do with knowing if any other welders have made the move and how they found their jobs.

We send off for jobs through job bank, monster, other sites etc but nowt!

Hope you all can help!

Welcome to the forum.

Maybe connect with JoolsGod on this forum. They might have a tip or two, although, having just checked your past posts, your soon to be PR status will hopefully make it easier for you than them (here on a TWP). Here's some of their past correspondence.

Are you following up the sending off of resumes by trying to make personal contact with the recruiting companies? That may be harder, I suppose, if you are applying through the likes of Monster. Just a suggestion but maybe do a search for welding companies in your areas of choice on Yellow Pages, for instance...
http://www.yellowpages.ca/search/si/.../Calgary%2C+AB
...and try networking with the companies directly.

Best wishes with the search.

Kind regards,

Eamonn & Janet.

Hi,

You say you've checked the Wiki but you don't mentioning phoning companies etc? So not sure you've read the correct pages.

Have a good read of the Job Hunting section which will explain where you're going wrong.

Good luck, hope you find something.

Thanks for both of your replies.

Christmasoompa - Have read all the info but again just feel a bit rude really by ringing people especially when you have sent your resume repeatedly to them.

Just feels a bit like flogging a dead horse - "Sir, I am the best Welder for your company but hey I can't tell you when I will be a permanent resident in Cananda to start your job!".
I guess the reality is I don't want anyone to start saying to us on the phone voice to voice to get lost because we are wasting their time!

Still will take your advice and try some calls next week

Eamon and Janet - Will look for Joolsgod! Maybe we just need to get brave and start calling some people.

Did other people go through this ringing up people selling themselves for jobs but were unable to tell the bosses of when they were going to be permanent resident?

That's pretty much how anybody on here has found their job, if they haven't been able to get out to Canada and see people in person. Canadians like personal contact so you're much more likely to get a result that way - if you follow the advice in the Wiki then you don't have to be pushy, more of a polite 'did you get my resume and can I answer any questions for you' type of call after you've sent it to them the first time.

You'll find that most will be incredibly friendly and help you out, and if they have personal contact they're much more likely to remember you and want to give you that all important job offer.

Take a deep breath, and remember it could be worse - you could trying to convince them to go through the LMO/TWP process as well (as many on here have had to do), or you could be having to go and see them in person!

Good luck.

Drop us a PM and we will connect you with them via email. Or, if you use Facebook, send me (Eamonn) a friend request (you'll find details on my website below) and I'll connect you that way.

I know that the JoolsGod's husband hated the thought of picking up the phone and speaking to companies...but he gritted his teeth and did it and they are now living out here. I'm not suggesting it's easy...it's not, but after the first few calls, you'll find your own way of kick starting a conversation that is not too pushy. As to when you will be a PR, just say that you are right at the back end of the process and should hopefully be available to start work in the next few months.

Kind regards,

Eamonn & Janet.

lancashirebird is an unknown quantity at this point

i would honestly listen to the other posters, i helped acouple lately look for work in our area, they sent resume after resume and not one employer emailed them back.
When they arrived i passed them the phone book and said go for it, they did the knocking on doors and all the employers was saying that they dont deal with emails for resume as they are being sent so many lately.
My OH company advertised his job for the LMO, 30 resume came in the first day, 99.9% from overseas, so you can see what is happening here

Without picking that phone up, you wont get contact from employers i am afraid, what is the worst they can say "no"......cross them off the list and try again
