The hosting was in Alaska(!). She also had some work with Radio Canada in Montreal but that came from being connected, I don't think an immigrant would get a chance there.

Well I guess it depends on what aspect of broadcasting the OP wants to get into!

I read that the position is more marketing than broadcasting, but I think the point is still the same. Flipping the equation around so to speak, $73k is circa GBp35-40k in real money (not neccessarily at current exchange rate but trying to figure some equivalency here). Now, I'm not current with newly minted, or recently minted graduate salaries, but GBP35-40k seems a lot outside of the City?!

When I graduated I had a few big shot interviews in the big smoke and the starting wage was 32k. That was a well paid job for a new graduate. Back home in sunny cornwall that would have been beyond well paid, it wouldn't have been offered!

My first job after graduating (not in marketing I hasten to add) paid a princely 10.5k. Thats with a blue chip, blue oval multinational. It was a whiles ago though.....

Pater Mansbridge was/is an immigrant. He seems to have done quite well for himself.

What are acceptable salary ranges? I know that it's a bit like asking how long a piece of string is, but I'm just curious to get people's thoughts.

Our apartment is $1100 per month, although this is split between myself and my parter, paying half each. Only other outgoings are food, power, telecomms ($99 per month). No car as we will be in Halifax, and my parter has lived there for years without the need for a vehicle, although I'm sure we will get one at some point. Also there are no children yet.......yet!

Any information would be useful. Also, as a side note, I am applying for one position that pays $73,000 - is this good?
$73k is an excellent salary. Your take home will be $4k+.

I am surprised that just 2 years experience would be described as "extensive".

Amen to that. Very wise words.

Thankfully I didn't faff about for 3 years.

Started a marketing business during my second year, using skills obtained through my studies and banked just short of £88,000 last year alone during my final year. So much for Communications degrees.....!

The plan is to set up a business in Halifax at some point, although to begin with I'd like to spend a few years working for someone else just to give myself some ground.

I do class my experience as extensive, for example I held the marketing contract for an airline, as well as contracts with Channel 4, ITV and BMW.

Believe it or not - there are some young people out there who are hard workers!

Yes, there are, I also worked hard throughout uni and yet here I am working two part time jobs to get by. It's not about what you know here, it's who you know. As I said before my brother in law has a degree in marketing and communications and works for CBC, he holds a good position and is able, to an extent, ask for what he wants, he's still 13k short of what you believe your starting wage is going to be. More power to you if you get it but just be prepared not to, things are much different over here.

I hope you're not thinking of "coming from away, with funny ideas about new ways of doing things, because we have always done <insert anything here> this way".

If you can overcome the above attitude then all power to you, but Nova Scotian's don't take this particularly openly.

Also, if you have close to or more than $140,000 in the bank why worry about having a 'reasonable' wage, with those kinds of savings you could easily get by with your rent and car payments on a much lower wage than $73k
