I presume they were on foot patrol in the mall, and were told to get to know people, store owners etc. Maybe they were even on a break

Only jesting - but the article is quite biased, makes it sound like nothing ever bad happens in Calgary... It's probably not as bad as say Manchester, but still bad stuff still goes down...

The article is 10 months old and written in time of a booming Alberta economy. Fortunately police officers are not usually affected by economic downturns, more likely more needed as crime tends to rise in such times.
I don't think there's much doubt that Canadians respect their police more than do Brits in UK.

yeah good idea, cause we know who all the persons are who commit these crimes of course, but prefer to sit back and lounge around all day. we have beds in the station with big tv's, i regularly nod off to opra as i can't be arsed going outside in the cold, and if i do its only to sit in timmies for an hour eating donuts, then, and only when i'm full up, do i go outside and pick on some motorists as thats the easiest way to show i have actually done something that shift.

It's becoming clear to me now. The UK is trying to regain control of Canada by stealth. You only have to read through a few posts on here to see that the UK government is infiltrating its agents into key areas of Canadian life, such as education, health, the military, the police and other emergency services, and real estate.
