Do expat retirees need to pay 36% tax??
We are UK pensioners thinking of moving to Amsterdam/Amstelveen to be near our son who has moved over there. Through his company he gets 30% tax free salary. We have been looking at the tax rates and are a bit concerned about the 36% tax. Does this apply to everyone and if we retired to Amsterdam would be still have to pay 36% tax on our pensions which come mostly from the UK? If so then the move would not be viable for us as we really can't afford to lose one third of our income.

The 30% tax free salary thing is based on quite stringent (employment) rules and nothing to do with the "regular" income tax system of the Netherlands.
NL has tax scales according to your income just like UK, however, not only will you have to pay income tax, but also for health cover and other ancillary taxes/supplements based on your income and calculated fiscal 'wealth". In general, NL taxes are currently much higher than in UK, especially for retirees.

I believe retirement income is taxed in the country that pays it; one of the exceptions to the principle that people are taxed in their country of residence.
Health care is often the same, retirees have a special catagory in order to make it possible to move within Europe after retirement.
Spain, Portugal, and Greece survive on retirees.
These things are complicated and often vary according to your particular circumstances [like whether your retirement income is government or private...]
Ask my tax advisor; [email protected] or [email protected]
He's much better, cheaper, and friendlier than those Dutch based "expat" tax firms.

In the case of UK/NL, if you are resident in NL you will pay NL income taxes and health insurance. The only exception is if you have paid an amount of tax in UK on your income in which case inter - EU double taxation agreements come in to play.
Portugal, Greece, Spain are a whole different ballgame..
