They don't really understand British humour, to them it's as dry as a Pom's towel.
One thing that I've had to learn to do is (being of working class background myself) is to smile -in a manly way - when talking to guys I've met for the first time when greeting them, back in the Steelworks in Cardiff it would have got you a quick head butt.

To be honest I find dry humour travels well..my one-liners fetch the same response here in Melbourne as they did in London - I am escorted to the door, and quite right, too. Never had an issue in 10 years - infact I get as much my share of laughs as in the UK.
I find Australians just don't get bitchy sarcasm - well they get it - but don't necessarily appreciate it - but in the main if it's delivered with a regional accent they won't have heard it - which I think is partly the problem when people complain.
