We've had take outs x 1 each from the following since we arrived (healthy meals all the rest of the time, promise ):-

Subway
Pizza hut
Noodle box
Red Rooster
McDonalds
Some other place in Indooroopilly Centre food hall.

No wrong orders so far. It must just be a British Accent accent thing.

Our accents might be dodgy but your spelling is.

McSlave "sorry but happy meals only come with 4 nuggets"

Him "Oh, well 4 nuggets then please. Why did you ask if I wanted 6 though?"

McSlave " we have to offer in case you want 6"

Him "but they don't come in 6's?"

McSlave "No, but we have to offer. Would HE like a boy or a girl toy?"

They sell them with 6 here in South Australia...I know because that's what I get for me

You've avoided Brodies, an excellent decision ...

Thanks. Fixed it. Should have spelt it Indroopilly as pronounced.

Strangely a recruitment agent phoned me last week and he was English. I only noticed when he commented that he was. It sounded so normal to me, having just come from the UK.

Still adjusting the Oz accents here though.

Haven't seen them yet. I'll proceed with caution.

Nope. Haven't been that far north yet since the flight into Brisbane. I'm sure my time will come though, the more we get around.

its definitely my north east mongrel accent.

I have problems on the phone too, until I slip into a pseudo Australian NorthEastEngland variation.
At least you admit it mate..

...I was once part of the problem rather than part of the solution.

I coudn't remember what I had ordered and then did not understand the girl when she said "Bacon.....?" - I just stuck out me hand...sounded about right...

I ended up with someone else's order - a wrap rather than a muffin - but was hungry enough to eat it - then slip out...I was a bit miffed because it tasted like rubbish. (No surprise there..)

How is your accent after so long in S Africa & Blighty? (Have people in Oz commented on it?) Are you linguistically soft?

Says it all....I've been in situations where fellow English people have really struggled....I've never known whether I'm supposed to help them out - make eye contact..shrug in sympathy..I once saw a woman look very distressed - like a rabbit in a car headlight.. her body language was one of dispair..

what is more - she probably logged on to BE and vented afterwards!

I just go into Macca's ask for a Big Mac and then eat anything that I get back in the bag. I'm easily pleased.

Yup..on this occasion I had got up early to take the trouble and strife to the airport - and sneaked in on the way back out from the terminal before going in to work...ah! What's this? Maccas! What a surprise! And what's this - breakfast time?

They have all identified me as Saffa first and foremost so far, with a bit of an English accent. I spent ten years in the uk, so it can be expected.

I think they know the Saf accent very well from sport interaction etc...

I'm natively English speaking, so don't have any strong Dutch/Afrikaans accent.

Any idea if the McCafe concept has made it to the UK? My wife says the coffee and cakes are not bad at all.
