Would you do it all again?

Can it be that it was all so simple then
or has time rewritten every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
tell me would we? Could we?

As Barbra Streisand says, if you could do it all again......would you? Emigrate that is........

YES !!! ( but I'd like it to have been 10 years ago, not 3.)

Re: Would you do it all again?

Totally stuffed my working life and any career potential, but yes I would.

Got to admit that the Two Main Jobs I've had in my 30 years here have set us up fine.... Gas Meter Reading and Postal Worker. Although the Wifes Nursing has probably helped a lot.

I doubt if we would have been any better off in the UK whatever had happened.

I reckon I've got a far healthier attitude to other people now.... I attibute that to the Egalitarian nature of Australian society.

+1

But probably about five years ago for me. Would have still moved to England for the experience.

It would have been better for our kids (now teens) to have arrive in Oz at a younger age. :)

No. I think in hindsight we should have had our midlife crises in less expensive ways.

Re: Would you do it all again?

Yes. Wish I'd come sooner.

But feel lucky to have come when I did. Points were something like 100. About $2.50 to the pound. House prices still high in the UK. Aus house prices still cheaper than the UK (relatively speaking). Cheaper cost of living.

Couple of things I would do better. I should have relied on myself rather than professionals to transfer pension and set up superfund. I should have done the first year tax return myself rather than using a professional.

Re: Would you do it all again?

yes,
wish we had got in the first time we tried in 1991, but didn't have enough points. Had to wait to 2006, but well worth it.

ps. 5 years here as of yesterday

Yes to the country and the job and lifestyle for me and the son but no to the rest. Had I been aware of all factors before i emmigrated I'd have stayed at home with supportive family and friends. Personally, I find a lot of the people you meet here or just not of the calibre of the ones you left behind. But, as i'd gave up a good job in UK that I can't return to and sold a house I would never get back at the price I paid for it, I'm stuck here making the most of it so just as well it's a nice country with plenty of things to do.

Yes, without a shadow of a doubt. Although saying that we would have ensured we got PR in Canada at the time and then we wouldn't have to have left Nova Scotia.

Yes for sure! but i would have done it 4 years earlier when my eldest son was at an age where he wouldnt have been at Uni and decided to stay in UK! :( Coming to Australia is the one crazy thing I have done in life which I have no regrets over:thumbsup:

Nope - would of liked to come home after the 4 years planned on 457 but got carried away and husband wanted to stay.

No, economics don't make sense now plus the kids are all 8 years older and it's not fair to move them.

Sorry but am I the only one not to know how to answer this :( (Blonde day today!)

Emigration for us is a success, into our 5th year so think it's safe to say that.

Would I emigrate somewhere else though? No. No. No.

I would say in that statement my experiences here parallels it. Except for I refuse to believe or even say that I am stuck here. If that were the case I would end it now. But there are far too many other places yet to experience, there are some real gems on this planet - Palau, Cortona, Victoria, Hawaii... So at present I'll be patient and build my options base and keep my eye on the time when I can pull the pin on this place, shake the dust from my feet as I enter the plane and making sure I don't let the door hit me in the ass on the way out...

Not trying to be funny but are you referring to England or Australia?

Merseygirl May 1st 2011 4:33 pm

Re: Would you do it all again?

No, on balance I feel as though I have lost more than I have gained by moving here - I am talking emotionally and spiritually rather than financially. I came to Australia when I was younger to please my now ex husband which with the benefit of hindsight and maturity was not the right thing to do.
Having said that; I don't hate the place - I make the best of the life I have here but it has never been 'home'.

Re: Would you do it all again?

Definitely yes, the right decision, just wish I'd done it 5 years ago, then again I'd not have met my OH so it's been the right time for us both.

Since moving here I have never felt so free in all of my life - free from the politics of a very messed up country, from a family situation which was incredibly unhealthy for all involved, and from a work situation that was, in the end, going to drive me insane, LITERALLY! And no, before anyone jumps in, I didn't move to Australia to run away from all of these things, I made a huge amount of sacrifice too, some of the things I gave up I'll never ever forget. However, I feel I'm in a much better place emotionally, geographically and financially, than I have been for a long time.

God Bless Australia

Re: Would you do it all again?

No way,Not to Australia these days but glad came when i did in the mid 90s.
On reflection would have been better to have stayed a few years and returned to work Europe.

Would certainly leave UK though,if still there and move to Europe and/or possibly Asia.
One reason being with the years spent in Australia along with time spent working in Western Europe, would have easily been able to retire early, on a very decent pension in a few more years and taken up other pursuits.
Now looks more the case will be self funded as will never have enough in super for a comfortable retirement.

Both, actually. I should have emigrated to the UK at least 2 years earlier than I did, and I should have returned at least 2 years earlier than I did.

Once you walk out on your past life its gone... there and then.

If I could rewind to the point, 5 years ago, when my company asked me if I would fancy the move to Australia, with hindsight I would probably answer "no"; rather than the "yes" I said first time round.
Having said that, the question of if I would I go back to the UK again now, is a difficult one to answer. On balance, at this precise moment, I probably wouldn't, but I would hate to think that I'd never return to live there again one day.

Re: Would you do it all again?

Same time, same place, same circumstances then yes. And Poll, I think you would too because circumstances at the time for you, made it the right move. It's what's happened since that has made it 'wrong' move but you won't even know that for sure until you die because you have no idea what will happen in the future and you'll never know what would have happened if you'd stayed. You play the cards as they're dealt, you can do no more than that.
