The reason it can take a while to get into is because there are so many rules!
It's a game of constantly changing strategy. If you know the game you can see this happening constantly as the coaches and the leadership group on the field change tactics in order to gain an advantage.

Getting this strategic upper hand is everything.
Adelaide did it with Essendon on Friday night and ran away with the game!
(Sorry Hevs & Bordy)
Then on Saturday, Geelong thought they were home when The Eagles completely changed their game and came back from 10 goals down to grab one of the best results in their history.

So it you don't know anything about Aussie Rules, how can you be taken seriously on this thread?
All this stuff about, "it's all fighting", "you just run around with the ball", "it's for poofs" etc. etc. is wearing a bit thin.

Aussie Rules is Australia's national game, but you never hear Aussies constantly bleating and moaning about how much they hate Association Football, do you?

So get over it. If you don't like it.... Fine. Don't watch it, and leave the rest of us who do to enjoy it.
But the OP was asking for peoples opinions on it, and that is what he got, some like it some don't.

So what's to get over

Yes you do actually. Quote "a game for wogs and sheilas" and I am frequently told it is called "wogball", so they manage to moan about it and be racist at the same time . As for the rest of your post, um, have you read the rest of this thread .

Fair comment, but I wouldn't comment on an internet thread about Lacrosse for instance, saying, "Yeah, that bloody Lacrosse! It's played by a bunch of trumpets with funny looking tennis rackets!"......

No.... Because I know bugger all about the game!

The reason soccer has a bigger world wide following is that it is a simpler game: the rules are easier to understand and will therefore appeal to a larger audience. Also soccer has no requirement for special equipment or special surfaces so it can played (virtually unadulterated) almost anywhere.

I'm surprised that Aussie Rules is considered the national sport as it is mostly a Victorian thing. It's a minority sport outside Victoria.

Although soccer has a big following with young Australians a lot of them transition over to the major sports (Aus Rules and League) when they hit their teenage years. I do think the World Cup will raise the profile of soccer in Aus but like the US it is unlikely to take over from the major sports. I suspect that it will become like Rugby Union (in Aus) in that it will remain a minority sport but with sufficient participation to allow Aussie to perform well internationally.

Replacement for real football????? IT IS REAL FOOTBALL.

Anyone who doubts the entertainment value of it just needed to watch the Eagles against the Cats on saturday, fantastic stuff, and when it comes to fitness these guys could run rings round your soccer players any day.

It really is a great sport, the more you get into it the more you enjoy it.

I've read the whole thread now and quitea few of the comments made are so wrong its laughable.

Lack of rules........ WTF more rules than most supportes know and they sometimes create new ones too just to add to what you have to remember.

Not a national sport... played mainly in Victoria...... if you have ever tried to get tickets for a game at Subi you will know what complete tosh that is.

There was also a comment about kids not being interested in playing it...... well you just want to takea look at the clubs my kids play in, Auskick on a saturday morning where you get hundreds (yes hundreds) of kids all turning up to do their training and play their game, they are encouraged and nurtured, you can see even at this stage which kids have a chance of making it big, the whole family is involved, with family training days often led by development teams from an AFL team, mothers day games, fathers day games where the family can all play. My eldest plays at under 10s level, the whole team are so committed they will turn up twice a week for training even though they are only required to train once.

Yes some kids prefer to play soccer, but in my opinion that is more down to the number of migrants who want their chilren to continue playing soccer, in my area a large precentage of those involved with soccer are families from the UK.

That is my rant almost over except to say one last thing, this is Australia, football means Australian Rules Football, the other game is referred to as soccer, thats just the way it is.

Football Still Number One

Football remains Australia's most popular participation sport, with nearly 1.1 million people playing the game.

After conducting a 12-month investigation ending June 2005 into participation rates of various sports, researchers Roy Morgan found that the world game topped the pops, beating out second placed cricket and third placed basketball.

AFL was fifth with about 600,000 participants, almost half of soccer.

Rugby League, with 400,000 players, and Rugby Union, with 250,000, ranked 7th and 8th.

"The great attraction of football is its physical democracy and its simplicity. Everyone can play and everyone can understand the rules," said Chief Executive John Didulica.

"The challenge for the game is to convert this massive participation base into a critical mass of elite players that represent the best Australia can offer."

It would seem that football has greater participation than League and AFL put together, although this study was conducted by the Australian Professional Footballers' Association.

The quote in bold is why football has the potential to become the number one sport in Australia. Australian footballers have been enjoying success around the world for sometime (think Craig Johnston for Liverpool in the 80's) and now have the potential to earn more money in one year than an AFL player can earn in a career. The A League has got off to a good start and the Socceroos qualifying for the World Cup must have been heaven sent. If the A League can continue to grow and capitalise on a sport that has a huge participation level (and one might assume fanbase), then I think that AFL will become the minority sport.

Given that the last friendly the Socceroos played against Greece in Australia managed to get a crowd of 95,000, it clearly isn't just British Expats that love the game. With large populations from a variety of European countries, there is huge potential for football to grow in this country. The key with the A League is that it has moved away from the ethnically based teams that led to the violence that troubled the National League, making it a far more family friendly game.

I look forward to watching endless games of football on the free TV channels, rather than the endless AFL that is shown at the moment.

why does it have to be one or the other? Thats what i can't understand about all the great soccer fans on here, they can't abide football and seem to see those who follow football as inferior or insulting to soccer, why can't both be supported alongside each other. As a family we follow West Coast through the footy season and Perth Glory through the soccer season, what we certainly don't do is give a monekeys about any team in the UK or the premiership, thats on the other side of the world so not part of our lives.

Maybe i just don't get it

You said that you had read the previous posts here. AFL supporters ARE insulting to football and it's fans, again "a game for wogs and sheilas". The two sports' seasons don't overlap in a major way, so they could both be shown on the free channels rather than just endless AFL and the various shows that relate to it.

As for not giving a monkeys about the UK leagues, this is British Expats, so funnily enough most people here have spent a fair chunk of their lives in the UK and so retain some interest in what happens there. That includes following football teams that have been supported since childhood. It is great that Foxtel show so many games from the Premiership, long may it continue.

I have heard it reported many times (since the early 90s) that the higher participation in soccer in the US means that soccer will become bigger than gridiron. It hasn't happened yet and I doubt it will ever happen. I think the same will happen in Aus. I previously said that the game will become more popular (and I agree the A-league has started well) but I reckon it is too early to write the obituary for the current major codes (Aus Rules and League).

I agree that the increased participation will lead to more international players (like the US) and an improvement of Australia's performance in international competitions (like the US) - that was one of the points I made in my last post.

The quote from the APFA is suspect (as you said) because it does not mention Netball. Also it's ranking is a bit like saying Cricket is not a major sport in England because it has a low participation across Europe.

I too would like to see less Aus Rules on the TV but I would not like to see it replaced by wall to wall soccer. There's much to be said for a bit of variety in life.

Mas nada disto será o que quer que seja...

No you don't get a lot do you? It's football not soccer, the Aussies are campaigning for it themselves, in fact i've seen socceroos shirts with it written on.

Facts speak for themselves one is game loved universally the other a game loved in Victoria.

Believe me there is more skill involved in football, do you really think those earning a living in AFL are skillful enough to play football, if they were they would be playing it and earning up to $250000 a week.

The Aussies are happy to call Aussie Rules - football or footy, Rugby League - football or footy and Soccer - football or footy. Why do the English get so upset about this?
