OH has spent this morning working. The boss in Melbourne has e-mail issues. OH spends a lot of time getting in touch with IT department to fix issues - they send an e-mail to the MD in Melbourne saying issues are now fixed. DUH! MD doesn't get e-mail as they haven't fixed issues.
OH gets back to IT dept. and tells them to RING MD. (He also includes the big boss in NY so he can see just how stupid the IT help department in Melbourne really are.) This wastes a good two hours.

One of the slightly interesting parts of IT is all the rounds of teams all 'looking' after servers, and performing a whole myriad of support tasks all the time that get overlooked by the business.
I am more than happy to leave on the dot at 430pm or 5pm, with the proviso that I don't mind taking a call or getting my laptop out later on for a severe and critical task - but don't count on it. I will, however, manage the time and get it done.

The IT department (and it could be any one of ten teams) often gets it in the neck - but I wouldn't or couldn't do their job. It doesn't help that in some cases it's all off-shored. Interesting from the point of view they exist, not necessarily what they do.

My OH is in effect the IT manager for the Asia-Pacific region, but he is in Sydney and the MD is in Melbourne, and they won't pay for an IT dept down there so they outsource. If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys, so to speak. OH is fed up with having to rescue the Melbourne lot from their seemingly incompetant IT people.
Some jobs outsource well, and it probably is the future, others don't.
We have teams in India, with a tiny team providing cover in Australia.
Want to get a network point on a wall 'patched' anywhere in Asia-Pac - an Indian will do it!
