Maybe she had it on in the shopping centre and then stripped it off again when she went outside. I used to have to do the same with my babies, singlet and nappy for outside and then a grow suit in the freezing airconditioned malls.

I wasn't talking on my phone, or using it to take the video.

It was one of those thoughtfully-designed shopping centres with glass on one side of the roof, so a lot of heat and some sunlight was getting in, but I don't think UV protection was necessary. It certainly wasn't cool inside the shopping centre. The mum, her toddler and grandma were dressed in light clothes, but the poor baby was very pink. It's usual to see babies in shopping centres in a nappy and vest in this weather, with some sort of light blanket for super-chilled supermarkets. We're having really nasty weather in Perth at the moment (need a dripping with sweat, hot and bothered icon).

Two whys from youngest son:

Why do all Aussie teens have ipods?
(Not nearly as many had them in the UK).

And

Why are his Aussie peers so crap at football?
(He's bemused by the fact that he's the best football player in his year here. In the UK there were plenty better than him).

The answer to the second is that it's a minority sport.

The great thing is that I'm not last to be picked over here. He should enjoy it while he can. Bouncing an egg shaped ball on the trot is harder than you think.

I think I might already have another possible reason for the second one. The day before yesterday eldest son told me his PE group were given two choices by the coach. The could play either football or "touch" rugby. The majority voted football. The coach made them play rugby

My eldest is not at all pleased about that. In the absence of football - which he enjoys and is pretty good at, he's been trying to join a basketball team at college but he was so despondent today about it. Reckoned all the others are tons better at it than he is and it's making him feel a tad marginalised

Both are excellent rugby players and hate this "touch" rugby nonsence.

At the end of the day that's why soccer is the world's most popular sport. You can pretty much play it anywhere as the chances of hitting the ground hard and hurting yourself are minimal. It also has simple rules.
