Brits heading home? why on Earth would a Brit want to leave the sunny shores of Australia and head back to the UK?

We haven't won the Ashes yet. We have drawn one test and won one test. More tests still to play.

My thoughts exactly. Bit confused to be honest but it's easily done at the moment

No because that's why the federal government can adjust visa numbers each year to account for the long term economic prospects. I prefer that to some media fuel drivel response that may be espoused by some xenophobes.

We remain a migrant nation and given our economic prospects still remain better than most western nations in the short term according to most economists, I'm not sure why this would actually be of any benefit.

The UK is in a different economic and social position. Our needs remain different.

I'd also like to know who will be staffing the hospitals, providing medical services etc etc or is it only specific Brits you don't want in OP?

As others have said, please clarify, are you only wanting to exclude poms or all migrants?

Interesting point: imagine that Australia had open borders with the whole of South East Asia, no restrictions on immigration and no pre-selection of those arriving - just a bucketload of people coming in unchecked, some with incomplete criminal records checks.

That would be the UK and the EU then.........so finally the UK wakes up, puts in place a decent immigration system aimed at selective migration. Unfortunately the system only deals with the rest of the world with which it does not have its hands tied......there is still the unchecked migration from the EU....or at least there was, until the pound went south.......and stuck in the middle of all of this are people from Australia, a country that will freely accept migrants from all areas selectively.

The dichotomy is the relationship with the EU, open borders etc vs the restrictions placed on others....of course, if you went to another EU country and got citizenship there, you could walk into the UK any time you liked......!!!!

Like it does with New Zealand citizens you mean?

Approximately 2% of the Australian population were born in NZ - the equivalent would be about 1.2 million EU born residents in the UK.

Another way to look at it - the number of NZ citizens living in Australia is equivalent to about 10% of the popluation living in NZ itself. If that situation was replicated for the EU and the UK there might be 40M+ EU residents living in the UK (not counting UK citizens of course).
