I dont really do the karma thing but have pressed it a couple of times tonight - now it wont let me just dish it out as I wish. It says I have to spread it around.

Once you have given to one person you have to give to several others before you can give to that person again, not sure of the number, it's because the number of blue squares on your posts is dependent on the amount of Karma, and it's to stop one person boosting the rating of another one by giving them loads of Karma one after the other.
