I used to jump around a summer house in a pretty white dress whilst hoping Julie Andrews wouldnt notice that I had climbed up the drain pipe and snuck into her room as the front door was locked.. she was planning on making play clothes out of the curtains.. of course, the Captain wouldnt approve.. but then again the Captain would fall in love with her eventually... provided those darn Nazi's wouldnt try and make him sail his boat in the army.. he was Austrian, didn't you know............

I thought it was Durban/Safrican pronunciation until I came here!

The Canadians say 'Datta', well at least Geddy Lee does.

Data is a plural of datum, which is originally a Latin noun meaning “something given.” Today, data is used in English both as a plural noun meaning “facts or pieces of information” (These data are described more fully elsewhere) and as a singular mass noun meaning “information”: Not much data is available on flood control in Brazil. It is almost always treated as a plural in scientific and academic writing. In other types of writing it is either singular or plural. The singular datum meaning “a piece of information” is now rare in all types of writing. In surveying and civil engineering, where datum has specialized senses, the plural form is datums.

I guess the pronunciation doesn't really matter - who knows how the Ancient Romans pronounced it? I find 'dayta' more natural and feel dahta is a bit would-be posh, but it sounds like it is becoming mainstream.

I have seen many pronunciations change in my life: I have to live with them, but I don't have to use them.
Yes, I know that, I did Latin at school (for my sins), but a collection of Data is still called singular Data.

People pluralising it is just annoying. "these data" is just wrong.

And while were on the subject! Shouldn't Datum just be Fact!

For example:

"540 people were born in Queensland yesterday"

Datum or Fact?

I do know one thing they get from Ireland - saying 'haitch' for 'aitch'. I complained to the principal of my lads' catholic primary school about this, and he said he'd tried in vain to stamp it out, but it came over from Ireland with the teaching nuns. Now my sons are adults but they still say 'haitch'. I guess school trumps parents in language matters.

I have noticed one creeping Americanism here - the vanishing 't'. This letter is often omitted in American speech, or downgraded to 'd' and it is starting to vanish here. Even newsreaders say 'amorrow' for tomorrow.
Examples: American 'interview' becomes 'innerview'
American 'letter' becomes 'ledder'

And here's a list of common mispronunciations:
http://www.yourdictionary.com/library/mispron.html

Ah, I say 'haitch' and get the pish ripped out of me at work for doing so. I (and the rest of the Irish population) also say 'siXth' instead of 'sicth' and it took me so long to get my head round it. I notice my boss also says 'Se'tember' which is a new one on me. I have to say I don't say 'filum' or 'turty tree' for my sins.....

Has anyone noticed the extra "haitch" appearing in words like conshumer, asshume, conshume etc?

And don't know if anyone uses it here in Australia but one that annoys me - because it really doesn't seem to mean anything - is "Much of a muchness"

Oh well, whatever, nevermind ...

I've noticed that in the SE of England people pronounce "us" as "uzz", "girl" as "gehl". How strange .

"Dayta" is British, "Dahta" American. It's that simple.

It must have slipped through because it is fun. (Though I do understand that when it first came out in the 60s the southern states were not right impressed with the idea of a black female bridge officer. (but all the men I knew fancied her)
