Can't remember what else I've set it up for and its all free software with $100 of hardware + some usb discs.

I'm not sure if it has better performance than Cat5 - maybe an IT expert can enlighten us? Cat6 is capable of running gigabit ethernet but I think Cat5 can too. I went for Cat6 for futureproof reasons - I only want to have to install it once! I reckon both will be faster than what you are running at the moment. I bought mine on Ebay. You can buy it at most computer shops but it can be expensive - $1.50+/metre. I paid about $0.30/metre on Ebay. You get a lot of guys buying 305m rolls of the stuff and selling the leftovers online.

Depends how old the cat5 is - most newish cable is actually cat5e which can do gigabit speeds. I think companies only use cat6 because its rated/certified for gigabit use.
I only use cat5e and all our new servers/switches at work are gigabit. Its got to be a lot of constant data flow to notice any difference. When transfering a movie from one PC to another it will not make a lot of difference. Most of my home downloads are limited by the internet (10meg ish) so no point having cat6/gigabit swithes at home. Wireless G is plenty fast enough for my home use. All our pcs have gigabit network ports and I'm using 85Mbps PoE plugs, which leave us plenty of headroom for additional bandwidth once the NBN kicks off. |
Re: What uses do you have for your PComputers.
We use Wi-Fi for everything except the NAS which is plugged into the router.
5 laptops, 2 x pc's, Internet Camera, wireless photo printer etc... We each have our own music ripped locally so streaming is not that important really, but do have streaming working. |

Just wondered how people use their computers at home.... besides Bexpats and other forums etc.
In the last 36 hours, I've set up the Daughters Linux eeepc as a media center... bloody working beautifully as well, Wireless connected to my TV then VGA in.... can run any media I like, via a linux version of VLC media player. Not the best interface in the world, but damn fast... a lot faster than the WDHDTV but not as pretty..although I'm sure there are programs to make it look "nice" . I've actually got a library of over 1,000 movies and countless gigs of music and photos. The Logitech wireless Keyboard and mouse actually worked on the damn thing straight away which amazed me.... anyone that has worked a little bit with linux will know why ;) So I know owe the daughter a Windows laptop.... which is fine by me. Although it's made my WD HD TV redundant dammit. With my main Home PC.... finally got the sons PSP working with downloaded games..... fixed up the wifes Nintendo DS again with some downloads... and worked out how to rip "MY" DVD's on the fly after trying a hell of a lot of programs..... without sound synch problems... DVDFAB Platinum for the protection (couldn't get Slysofts anydvd to work on my machine properly .......registration problems ;)) and AOA to Avi converter actually rips without sound synch problems. So those using AGK for ripping to avi can give that the flick. Also sent a couple of emails of to the folks during this time. So how do you use your computers. I can't wait for an upgrade to the study PC so I can upgrade the media center in the theater! |
Re: What uses do you have for your PComputers.
For clarification CAT5 is not certified for Gigabit Ethernet. Cat 5E is and CAT 6 even better but well terminated CAT5E is fine for home use.
A pointer for those with Wireless Do you have cordless phones? If so are they 2.4GHZ or 1.8GHZ. 2.4 GHZ phones clash with Wifi (specifically 802.1XB/G and N). You can try a different channel on your router. Wireless is also susceptible to interference and the geography of your house. Placement of the router can help. In theory Wireless N will be up to streaming media but if that interference is there you will get issues. |

I'm running it on my main PC - W 7 Ultimate 64-bit. So far so good, although in all honesty I have not noticed any significant improvement over Vista.
I like the libraries and the quick jumps on the task bar. Windows XP mode is a resource hog but necessary if you have something that just will not run. I find IE is still not as zippy as Firefox. UAC is less naggy but still operates in the same way. Problem steps recorder is handy. Best new thing is the ability to natively expand and shrink drives including the OS drive. For sys admins there are a lot of good GPO improvements and MDT2010 is improved. I am still to see a security risk assessment of Directaccess. Branchcache could be good but I am interested to see how it behaves in the wild and how it handles conflicts. |

PoE or EoP?
One is where you deliver power over UTP for low power devices, typically VOIP.

Great, thanks guys. I gave up on wireless early this year and made the switch to PoE. What a difference! I'll never go back to wi-fi now.

Although the old wireless sender was hopeless, especially when the Microwave got used. Tried the Microwave and all the phones whilst streaming via the Belkin and not an impact thus far. My assumption is, the old IInet supplied Belkin must be using a frequency other than 2.4 ghz ? Sounds like windows 7 could be the go. Are there that many people actually buying it... or they using other methods :sneaky: |

Its on my spare laptop now just for messing about with. |
Re: What uses do you have for your PComputers.
I hear through the applevine that Windows 7(copied versions) are giving problems on Dell and Hp machines.

Re: What uses do you have for your PComputers.
Worrying I actually like Windows 7. That from an OSX man. But its been rock solid for me thus far and frankly very good to use.

Re: What uses do you have for your PComputers.
Just checked out the frequency on my modem, and it is running @ 2.4g So I've no idea why my wireless video sender rated at the same frequency wouldnt work even though the equipment is almost exactly in the same position.
Bit of a surprise actually. . |
