What do you reckon about this:

Living room I've got a quad core hackintosh with something like 3Tb of storage space on it, running OSX Leopard 10.5.6. Running on that I've got EyeTV Diversity (for TV watching/recording) with the EyeTV 3.0 software and Boxee (for movies/music) which hooks up with all my other network shares. That's all hooked up to a 42" Panansonic Viera plasma and a Sony surround sound system. It's hooked up to the network via its own switch on the back of the rest of the gigabit network.

In my office I have a new unibody MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard with an EyeTV client on it to share TV programs while I work. It's hooked up to its own 5.1 surround sound. Attached to that is a 1Tb WD drive I use for my music colleciton which is shared via iTunes, Bonjour and SMB. I also have a quadcore windows PC in here running Windows 7 64bit, which I play games on.

In the kids playroom there's a little HP media PC which I salvaged from a client's lightning insurance job. This runs Windows 7 and is primarily used for playing movies/browser based games - though it's not terribly speedy. The kids also have an older Dell desktop in mum's office for homework related MS Publisher stuff.

Downstairs in the wife's office there's her MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard which is networked Bonjour-stylee to all the various network shares. Everything's on a gigabit network, hard cabled, apart from the Asus Internet Radio in the kitchen which connects via a Belkin Wireless N router at the other end of the house.

I can control the entire set up from a couple of apps on my iPhone, particularly the Ajax client for Remote Buddy (which can also use the Wiimotes to great effect), the EyeTV iphone app, the iTunes iPhone remote, the Boxee iPhone app, the IceTV scheduler and the Air Mouse software.

Copying files across the network can be a pain.

I have a wireless network using 2003 tech - well that was the year I bought 'B'? I bought a 'G' wireless modem last year only to find I should have bought a 'N' one...the 'G' is still in the box.

My wife swears she can hear or detect the wireless and insists we turn it off when not in use.

My friend has wireless and she just gets dropped out all the time. Happened to speak to brother tech with large telco he told me that at heavy times if you are further from the signal tower then you get dropped off as people who are closer to it come on line.

We all have a computer, well I have two pcs and oh has a laptop so does my daughter so we can all be on line together. I have ADSL2 with wireless with Big Pond and it works very very well. I do not bother downloading movies and things off the web as have IQ2 and have no time to watch what I save on it.:D

In the last 36 hours, I've set up the Daughters Linux eeepc as a media center... bloody working beautifully as well, Wireless connected to my TV then VGA in.... can run any media I like, via a linux version of VLC media player. Not the best interface in the world, but damn fast... a lot faster than the WDHDTV but not as pretty..although I'm sure there are programs to make it look "nice" . I've actually got a library of over 1,000 movies and countless gigs of music and photos. The Logitech wireless Keyboard and mouse actually worked on the damn thing straight away which amazed me.... anyone that has worked a little bit with linux will know why ;) So I know owe the daughter a Windows laptop.... which is fine by me. Although it's made my WD HD TV redundant dammit.

With my main Home PC.... finally got the sons PSP working with downloaded games..... fixed up the wifes Nintendo DS again with some downloads... and worked out how to rip "MY" DVD's on the fly after trying a hell of a lot of programs..... without sound synch problems... DVDFAB Platinum for the protection (couldn't get Slysofts anydvd to work on my machine properly .......registration problems ;)) and AOA to Avi converter actually rips without sound synch problems. So those using AGK for ripping to avi can give that the flick.

Also sent a couple of emails of to the folks during this time.

So how do you use your computers.

I don't have a telly plugged into Oz telly... PCs (Laptops actually) are used to download the telly programmes that I want to watch and then I just plug it in via some cable and watch it on the telly.... then all films are watched either via the dvd player (UK only) or the Powerdvd (Oz only)...

I then use forums, facebook for keeping in touch with people...

I use Youtube for educational purposes usually... ie, I needed to work out the best method for my breadmaker so I you tubed it, and got a nice little vid showing me how to do it ! :)

I built my current PC running windows 7 with dual monitors, more storage than I could use blah blah. Its connected to an Apple Express powered wireless network so we have speakers mounted various rooms and outside and can stream itunes to whichever rooms we like or all of them for parties from any of the computers, or in fact anyone's ipod or iphone for that matter.

My PS3 acts as a media server for the main TV and our Yamaha Clavinova digital piano is connected to the network as well.

The wife has a macbook pro and I the same since I dont like spending leisure time in my study, where I spend much of the time...er studying..and so can do other more constructive things around the house elsewhere.

Gosh things have moved on from when I was amazed as a kid at seeing my friends dad's modem. The type where you put the handset into the rubber connectors....

I'm running it on my main PC - W 7 Ultimate 64-bit. So far so good, although in all honesty I have not noticed any significant improvement over Vista.

Blimey gadgeteer of the year  I'd love to see all that stuff in action.

Seems like people are really getting diverse uses for their media out of their home computers now.

I'm not moving from XP on my home PC's until 7 is tried and tested.... especially with regard to ripping DVD's and Blu Ray. XP turned out to be a far better OS than Vista..

We have an old dell p4 running ubuntu, it shares all our media to tv through an xbox360(ushare), backups all the other pc's/laptops(backuppc), vpn's to the uk at 1 am(consult-here thanks hutch for the recom.) and downloads all the progs off the iplayer(get_iplayer) we want for the next day, serves all our files(samba) also had it working as a mini phone/sip exchange/voicemail box (asterisk but totally unnecessary so stopped that), shares all the music to each pc(firefly). Can't remember what else I've set it up for and its all free software with $100 of hardware + some usb discs.

Re: What uses do you have for your PComputers.

I've got an old acer which as a desktop. It doesn't get used much now [excepting some electronics development work] since I've got my little notebook and the wife has a laptop.

I've experimented with Mythtv and eventually plan to get one running as a media center - need a new PC first or else use the acer desktop.

I really need to get some CAT5e in the house as wireless is crap for streaming video - once thats done I can centralise the foxtel box/blu-ray/video server etc in a cupboard and feed signal to mutiple TV screens

Plus an asterisk server/nas server/cisco switches & routers [doing my CCNA now] and other crap.

I don't play with them too much at home - I think it's because I work in R&D so I'm surrounded by PC's/unix servers and embedded systems all day so there is plenty of cool toys to play with at work.

The biggest pain in the arse in this country is woeful internet speeds.
