So me and the wife are planning a weekend away just after Easter and have decided to take a look at Adelaide, never been before and know very little about the place. Easy to forget Adelaide is even there!

So is it worth the effort? I know it is the target of a few jokes for being a bit backward.

What are the highlights / things that you must see / do, we will only have 3 days so will probably be sticking to the city area and wont have a car this time.

Adelaide is a place I know very little about.

Take the Tram out to Glenelg

I go to Adelaide regularly (about every 3-4 months) and always find stuff to do in my downtime. Check out what festivals are on that weekend - there's usually something happening. http://www.festivalsadelaide.com.au/

Take the tram to Glenelg for a swim and have ice cream on the beach. Rent a car and go up to Hahndorf for a wander and lunch - there are a few really nice wineries up in that area you can go for tastings and a bite to eat. Drive further into the hills to Cudlee Creek to Gorge Wildlife Park (bring a picnic or stuff to cook on the free BBQs) http://www.gorgewildlifepark.com.au/. Take one of the winery tours of the Barossa (there are buses that drive you around so you don't have to worry about sampling too much). There are some nice little restaurants in North Adelaide - Beyond India on O'Connell St is great if you like Indian. And right across the street is a great old movie theatre if you want to take in a movie.

One of my favourite cities is Adelaide. It's very easy to get around and I always manage to find something to do.

Their football pub is worth a visit even if just briefly ..... I dont know of a better one in Australia. Love their staned glass, You will get chatting to a fellow football punter.

There's a decent curry place or two there in Central Adelaide.... You can have a look at the little piggies in the Rundle Mall, which is about the highlite of the place... have a sit down coffee and play spot the inbreed...

You forgot to mention the Mall's Balls.

Yes it's definitely worth a visit IMO.... I quite like the houses around town, interesting as there are lots of old Sandstone block places that you dont see around the rest of Aus. Best time to go is when the fringe/Arts festival is on

Adelaides a pretty good food town. There's a damn good chocolate outlet there, plus one of those "Rock" icecream places that you dont see around these parts at least.

Make sure if you do get chatting in that pub, That you mention Melbourne Victory in any context and watch their mood change LOL.


I think they could well be NO1 Sporting enemy now in front of Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon.

Be sure to rub those Malls Balls.... and get your picture taken with one of the local Pigs.

Gotta get me on one of those winery bus tours.

If you get the chance, there is also a brewery in Lobethal which is apparently really good and is included on one of the tours that takes in Hahndorf too.

You can take a cruise to see dolphins, and you can also swim with them

Dolphin cruise I was surprised at how reasonable it was.

If you do get to visit Glenelg, pop over to the Marina. It's nice there and there are some nice looking eateries there, a few specialising in seafood (earmarked for a child free night)

Haigh's Chocolate shop at the end of Rundle Mall sells some lurverly chocs and the SA Museum is free, just on North Terrace. There is also the State Library of SA which often has exhibitions on. You can hire free bikes to get around the city, which mercifully is flat.

Hahndorf is lovely for a wander around.
Gouger Street (City) for good cheap Asian food. (Also looove Beyond India in North Adelaide)
Gorgeous old bluestone and sandstone c1900 homes in the inner East and inner South. Check out Medindie, Gilberton, St.Peters, College Park
Burnside shopping centre (if you need to shop!)
Brighton Beach has some lovely cafes

Overall don't miss the Barossa..........take a tour or cab though

Love the wineries in Maclaren Vale a lot more than Barrossa (MV seems a little less pretentious and more compact) Most places do a great lunch as well. The tram is a great trip Glenelg to the city. Hubby and I live 20 mins out of the city but often book a night in Millar apartments on Hindley street, and go to the Apothecary for dinner(love the food and wine list is outstanding) You get to sit and have a few drinks while watching the madness of Hindley street, the casino is close by as well. A treat night for food is either Windy point restaurant or Penfolds in Magil (do the tour if you get the chance) Both a bit pricey but food to die for. Try the cheese board in Penfolds. The dolphin cruise as mentioned is great and inexpensive. Bike around elder park and try the "Popeye cruise". There is mount Lofty (perfect photo ops) and Cleland wildlife park. Walking distance of the city is the Zoo (pandas) and the botanic gardens, check the timetable for the outdoor cinema by the botanic gardens for a cool movie night. Check on line for tour buses to Cleland, wineries etc, there are a lots of mini coach tours to all these places
