Choices seem to be:

Samsung Galaxy SII
Apple iPhone 3 or 4
Nexus S
HTC Desire
Nokia 5230

Any opinions?

SII - better than any Apple fashion accessory and you don't have to be an isheeple clone.

I needed a cheap prepaid phone for the few months of the year that I am in Oz. in Optus I found blackberry prepaid 8520 for $149 with free blackberry web browsing and email for 6 months. I love blackberry - no flashy gimmicks like the Apple, and instant mail plus blackberry messenger (used by a lot of business colleagues and girls in Asia).

Perfect choice. Then I bought an Apple iPod 8gb from Harvey Norman for $164! now I have all of my music and crap on one thing, and My business calls on a phone that doesn't go flat in a day.

You have google voice but its more limited than siri. Can only do 'Call bob' and that sort of thing.

Siri is a piece of crap at the moment though, just a massive gimmick. It will be good in a few years once its advanced a bit though, and I'm sure google will be upgrading theirs to follow suit too.

There's actually a handful of voice apps for Android, of varying levels of complexity:

Iris
Speaktoit Assistant
Jeannie
Skyvi

Personally, I agree with Joe - I think it's all a bit of a gimmick, and probably only has a limited lifespan. People at work started off trying it out with some interesting results, but nobody uses it any more. And I haven't yet seen anybody sat on the train asking Siri questions...

Didn't know about those android apps, may check them out.

The only thing I can see Siri or its equivalent being useful for is if you're driving and want to call/text someone.

Jeannie passes the key AI test - "Who won the world cup in 1966?", or at least it did for me.

I think most of the apps require pressing buttons at some point though. And it would be better to integrate Sat Nav and speech functions for car use.

I got the galaxy at Christmas of my husband, and I love it. So easy to use its unbelieveable. 1 downside to it is the battery life isnt great - though what battery life is? I do still need to download an app that extends the battery life - that improved my husbands phone battery life no end. I usually have it on charge once a day to make sure it doesnt die on me when im out and about (either overnight at home through the mains, or plugged into the usb on my computer at work depending on the battery status) and I'm on the internet or playing games for most my 40min train journey to/from work and for about half hour at lunch time as well. Obviously i do make calls/text from it as well but i have noticed it lasts better on the weekends when im not on the internet/games the same.

I asked Siri out on a date.

She took out an anti stalking order on me
