Default What the hell has happened to footballing ability in Scotland ?

Whats going on guys ? I'm not gloating I'm actually concerned. Could this result be an indicator of the falling ability of Football in the UK as a whole ?

USA 5 - Scotland 1

What is worse is that 98% of americans don't even care about the sport.

They had the largest away contingent in SAfrica.... So maybe it doesnt matter ... I wonder if they make the quarters or semi finals in Brazil on the same time zone might make erm sit up.

Wouldnt that figure be a lot higher in places like California though ?

Portland Timbers had the 4th largest home and away crowd in the world last year... 64,600 plus. Thats not exactly full of hispanics surely ?

I'm guessing that your figure could be slightly out these days Plus after the next WCup which is looking pretty tasty from a US point of view that those figures could increase again. After all it is a younger persons domain.

Yes, I was exagerating at 98%. With the large influx of Latinos and some growing popularity I would unscientifically guess 70-75%

What do you mean what's happened? Aside from a couple of freak results (archie gemmil, etc) - Scotland have always been rubbish!

There has always been a few great Scottish household names, particuarly in the UK. Whats happened to the Lou Marcaris and Dennis Laws ?

I can also recall when that home international was a close run thing... Plus Scotland qualifying for the World Cup and England missing out.

So currently at present I'd say things are a lot worse.

Why wouldn't USA be better than scotland at football?

They have 300million inhabitants, even if only 10% play that's 6 times the population of Scotland.

Scotland overperformed for much of the 80s' and 90's, qualifying for tournaments when countries such as England, Spain and France didn't.

And the reason they don't qualify now is that there are more european countries playing for less european places at the world cup.

1982 - 33 teams played for 14 euro spots
1998 - 50 teams played for 15 euro spots
2010 - 53 teams played for 13 euro spots

As far as I can tell, from afar, England and Scotland are both still shit but the difference is just relative, globally.

I am a lapsed season ticket holder at the mighty, mighty Gillingham FC so this may have affected my judgement ...

Scottish goalkeepers are, and will always be, the pits though, I'll give you that

Not sure how accurate the FIFA rankings are but the USA (19) has an average ranking more than twice as good as Scotland (40) when averaged over the last few decades.

I had been in Oz all of 3 months and, being a geek, one of the first things I did was to join the library so I head off to our local wearing a Gillingham top (as you do when you're fresh off the plane or just the typical British expat who visits the Logan Hyperdome regularly ... What IS it with that place and soccer tops? I know I mentioned this before but really! ) and the guy behind the counter says 'My mate is a huge Gillingham fan!'.

Cue much 'the world is a small place' hilarity ...

Well, mild curiosity ...

Disinterest, maybe ...

Apathy, actually.

It was kind of real anyway ...

I spose letting in 5 isn't too bad for a team that plays without goalkeepers.
