Is it the Oz equivalent to Sky here in the UK? Is it true that there are some UK channels available on it, if so, which?

Oh yes. Just as much crap as on Sky, and you might even see the same manufacturer's badge on the box (what an anorak - used to work for the company that designed them).
Have a look here: http://www.foxtel.com.au/discover/packages/default.htm
Some BBC channels and more with UK programmes on them.

It uses the same technology as Sky but it is more expensive with way less channels than Sky offers.

Oh believe me you will want Foxtel when you move here, aussie TV is absolute crap, that's if you ever get to see any programmes inbetween all the adverts!! The guy who installed ours (Slovenian) said to us - oh you're from the UK, well it's like Sky only nowhere near as good!!!!! Saying that, we wouldn't be without it!

Oh no you don't! You WILL spend a minimum of one year watching Aussie TV first like the rest of us have had to endure before going to Fox! You don't get off the suffering the rest of us endure so easily young lady!

You'll know everything there is to know about Bessemer cookware, BAM and the dirt is gone! and those bloody infommercials about convenience foods.
(Our Foxtel is a waste of money, as these days the telly is not often switched on.)

On a totally different angle, I remember when I was in Oz, seeing people with hoovers on their backs, like strapped to their shoulders like a schoolbag, now THAT is a cool idea...can you get them easily? If so, I'd maybe actually start hoovering again...without being nagged to do so lol

Depending on where you live in Oz ... or your interests ..
There is also:
Transact
SelectTV
UBI World TV
Austar
.....
and the installed satellite dishes that pick up free channels from around the world..
