I've been on kiva since this past January. I've made 13 micro-finance loans so far to women with small businesses in developing countries. I'm using the same pool of initial funds and every time a loan gets repaid, I re-lend it.

I have previously been involved in working with children & youth, largely unpaid including a period where I was raising financial support in order to do this instead of having a "normal" paid job.

Some of this was in the UK, and briefly with ex-pats in Cyprus - but some of it has also included time with young people in both Albania and Romania, largely from a very poor background where (in one example in Romania) there were families of 6-10 people living in 2-room houses (that's literally 2-room, not 2-bedroom).

I'm currently considering returning to this kind of work, which would again mean having to raise financial support and not work in a paying job.

What have I done to help mankind? Given up on mankind really - I donate money to disaster appeals as and when but seriously - most problems are due to the fact there's too many of us. Hence I've started to donate far more to the education of women and the distribution of contraceptives.

What have I done to help the environment? Haven't bred, don't eat animals, donate my biggest sums to anti cruelty organizations like Animals Asia, Sea Shepherd, orang utah protection etc - I think it's inherently pointless as the pressure to produce fat efficiently farmed animals to eat is growing ever stronger, the poaching of endangered species for body parts is big business and by the time you've freed one sunbear from a bile crush cage there's another 10 put in. It's only a matter of time before there's no fish left in the sea and the human population has encroached into the remaining territory of the wildlife left.
