Default What do mums do during the day (when kids are in school)?

I've been in Oz now for 2 1/2 months and find that I can get pretty bored during the day while our little un is in school. Prior to coming out here I used to go shopping to ease the boredom (I know - I'm a shopaholic!!) but as the wages my hubby is now on are pretty dire thats no longer an option!

I have volunteered to read with the children at my daughters school - its only one morning a week but it'll be nice - start that next week.

I've also volunteered to be a driver for meals on wheels - this is only 1 day per month at the moment but may turn into more. I just thought it would be a good way to keep myself busy, meet new people and get to know the area at the same time. I'm doing it with another of the mums from the school (who I already get on really well with!).

I've joined the gym and go there a couple of times a week.

The rest of the time is spent doing housework and on here!! (I should really learn how to cook and have gorgeous meals waiting for hubby when he gets home but I just cant get my head around it!! ) No doubt when the weather starts to pick up again I'll be able to add 'lazing in the garden' to my list!

If a job comes up which school hours and term time only then I'll apply for it but I really dont want the hassle yet of having to cover school holidays and illnesses etc.

So my question is (which has turned into quite a long one!) - What do other mums do while their kids are at school?

Cheers

Thanks Binbird - the only problem is that I'm just over an hour away from the Northern Beaches and from Sydney so it'd be a bit of a rush! I have met up with a few BE members though!

Some other time then. . . . Tuesdays are my only free day so maybe we can organise the next one for Hornsby direction or somewhere half way between the coast and you. Geography was never my stong point!

Well my youngest starts school next Feb & i will be faced with the same dilema & to be honest, im scared I know i have to find some sort of part time work as we really could be doing with the extra cash but for the last 18 yrs i have raised my 4 kids, yes ive had childminding, cleaning jobs in between but this is it,its now my time to go & find some sort of work,im sure it would be easier for me if we were still in the UK,i understand the system & how it all works but here you need a licence for everything! i dont drive which makes things more difficult.
I had my first child when i was 16, so being honest ive not had any 'real'work experience.

Donna.

I will do in the future when things are more settled but at the moment I dont want to have to worry about covering school holidays and illnesses etc because we dont have the support network that we had in the UK. If something became avail though which was school hours and term time only I would definitely go for it.
