Well to update, I started to do the book for the MCDST exams to become a IT help desk person with the aim of then doing a basic UNIX exam so I can get into network administration and maintenance.
This was recommended to me by an IT chappie. Any IT gurus on here got an opinion on this - does it sound like a reasonable way in for a mid-late 30s person?

Have you thought about consulting, working for one of the big firms like PwC, EY, KPMG etc?

I wouldn't let lack of accountng skills put you off too much. Aside from their assurance practices they aren;t too fussed about accounting skills within advisory. I was in the Corporate Finance division of one of them for a few years with no corp finance or accounting qualifications.

"I'm not a gynaecologist.............. but I can have a blooming good look"

I work in internal corporate finance & have no accountancy degree nor other formal cert in this field expect a CIMA cert in business accountancy. It's possible to work within a company gaining the relevant expereince as you go over a number of years, and to do a really good job. Does make it difficult to move out of one company and into another tho, when you have the internal experience but no external qualifications in the field as I think I'll find to my peril if I ever try and get back into corporate life when we move to Australia. Not part of my plan tho, as I am happy to escape it! Which raises my own Qs about what to do next, hence following this thread
