Default What is Accelerated Maths Program...Year 9

My daughter's been asked by her school whether she would be interested in doing the AMP in year 9 in 2010. Any advantages/benefits or disadvantages?

Ta,

My eldest son did Accelerated Maths and English in NSW +WA
It means they can finish there year 10-11-12 in these subjects one to two years earlier and not have such a work load in their final year.
Can,t see any disadvantages in it.

cheers

The only disadvantage I can think of is that there would be due to the fact that it is accelerated. An accelerated program would be a quicker pace and generally speaking more homework. It all depends on whether your child could handle that. It would indeed lighten up the work load in their final year but by doing that you're increasing the work load earlier on.

Additionally you might want to see if she will be with any of her friends. I was pretty good at math in school and when I was in grade 11 I took a grade 12 math course. Sounds good in theory but I didn't know a single person in the class and wasn't comfortable asking for notes from other students or help from the teacher in that situation. So it's worth considering the sort of environment the child will be in. If your son was to know at least a few other students in the program it would be helpful.

My son started Advanced Maths in yr 8 so by yr 11 he had passed yr 12 and the same in English- the sooner they start the less (funnily enough) they have to do as a lot of the 8-9-10 is revision of the same thing.
I would agree the child has to be self motivated or it could overwhelm them.

Thanks Comet555. I think all the kids joining MacRob will be new to the school, so no worries about leaving school friends (she's left them behind in Dubai)

Having thought about it now, I would rather she does the AMP since she will be repeating year 9 in Oz in 2010 and she was already bored (as in not finding it challenging/being pushed hard enough) with Maths then.
