but my pregnant wife is a pom and she insists on wearing shoes everywhere, even in the house and it makes me feel a bit icky tbh. I hate slippers with a passion. I look wistfully at those barefoot aussie girls at the local shops....

Half full is better than half empty IMO. If something is wrong in your life and you can do something about it then do it and evoke change. If you can't change it then try and make the best of it. Bitterness and unhappiness eat into you. I would rather be happy than the alternative.
