Think I've told this before but basically I was steering a warship in the middle of the night and the compass went haywire. The backup gyro compass failed and we were in limbo for about 30 minutes.

A mere minnow in comparison but I've been helming our yacht at night when suddenly a massive orange ball appeared right on my starboard shoulder so I veered around quickly, dumped the sails, whacked the engine on and gone hell for leather in the opposite direction for 1/2 hour until I realised it was the moon.

Guess it would have been dark as it was about 3am.The helm was an old fashioned one in the bowels of the ship.A big old brass ships wheel that you had to haul around. The officer of the watch informed us we were in thick fog.Thick fog.Sounds cliche I know but true. He is the one who can see out the window on the bridge.

God help us!That's what made it so scary.Thick fog,no compass, alarm bells and flashing warning lights. All we needed to top it off was Klingons on the starboard bow.
