Essentially, yes ... Burn more than you consume.

There is a lot of needless complication out there, hence the multitude of books, plans, clubs, pills, potions and whatnot.

Getting enough protein to protect against muscle loss is not a bad idea too, will keep you full for longer as well.

It's more complicated at my end of the spectrum because I'm balancing weight against power output whilst trying to raise my FTP and TSS. And that can depend on how my race year is structured and whether it's going to be a TT or climbing or tri focussed year.

But for most, yeah it really is that simple. Even a fairly low daily calorie deficit will yield long term results for most folks.

I think I'll stay at my end of the spectrum.

Fair enough, look, my day has been liquid calories. The only solids to pass my lips today has been a white bread and Sakata sandwich.

This IS the exception I hasten to add and it IS Christmas

I shall log it in MFP as best I see 'fit'.

I decided to loose my extra weight about 3 months ago after an unpleasant chat with the doctor about my blood pressure. I started running which as a confirmed and lifelong hater of running came as a surprise to me as did signing up for a half marathon in March and a full marathon in October next year. So far I've lost 10kg and improved my running significantly although I get up at 4:45 and run 10k before work 4 times per week. For a change this seems to be a regime I can get along with. Only got another 15kg to get to my target weight but I'm not expecting them to be as easy to shift as the first 10 were.

I never would have thought of that as a (healthier) crisp sandwich substitute! If I hadn't already had a mince tart for breakfast I'd try that.

I do like a crispy sarnie last thing.

The last 3 days have also been a nutritional disaster area, been training in Sydney ... Much training the right arm with liquid carb-loading.

I watched this last night. Seemed to show them losing two thirds of a kilogram per day. Might try it myself to get rid of the majority of my flab and then switch over to a more sensible kind of diet to finish off...

That sounds like a great quick fix but I don't think I could stick with it for too long. It sounds like it might be useful though as a plateau breaker or to use in the reverse situation to you... to knock off the last couple of kilos which don't want to go.

I've been very good so far this year (7 days and counting) in that I've only had carbs in porridge for breakfast and no junk and have made sure I've done the 30 minutes a day exercise thing.

So far so good...

Well done with your seven days of dieting. Early days yet but how much have you lost so far?

I can see the merits of the reverse situation that you mentioned as a quick fix. The intermittent fasting diet that Alfresco has used looks like good one to finish off with. Seems to me that several spells on the main diets might be a good way of doing it without getting bored senseless.

My dad flew in on short notice on Boxing day and will be here for another week and a half so my diet's on hold til then ().
