Walter Mitty

How many posters on here are being really honest about themselves?

How many are living out a fantasy life online?

There are one or two who would need several lifetimes to have achieved/done all the things they claim?

I have met a lot of fantasists professionally.....I suspect I have met a few on here;)

What do others think?

I have no idea about others except for ROMFT;) who is actually a MI5 agent.

But avatars give me 'pictures' of people and yours always makes me think of a creepy school caretaker type fella:eek: Am sure you're not tho:sneaky:

I'm sure it is really a pic of someone I 'should' be aware of, however, I am a numpty so forgive my ignorance:p

I have met one who talked complete BS and I realised after meeting him a long time ago that he posted complete BS on here. I do believe that other posters have since realised this too. What I don't understand is that if you are going to post lies then don't meet people as they very quickly realise it is not true.

Crickey I often think there's an incredible amount of mundanity on here. I tend to present my best side I guess - never starting threads like 'thrush - who else suffers like me?' or 'acne - can anyone help?'

Not sure if there's anyone I'd consider a fantasist - maybe present best side only - a bit like me.

Re: Walter Mitty

Are you expecting the truth on an internet forum ? The anonymity of it is just a breeding ground for, 'tall stories'. Internet is sometimes nothing more than, 'bloke down the pub said.'

Some stories are to personal to really tell online. Some people don't really understand their own stories ! Some people don't so much emigrate as run away. Who would want to admit to that ?

Dig to far beneath the surface and, 'why should I tell you ?' will surface. It can get all a bit, 'me too' anyway on internet forums. I've realised some people will put up with just about anything once they've emigrated and still insist everything is great. Why ? However, there are people in their own home town that will put on a great pretence.

It could come down to them being a BS artist no matter where they are. Emigration is great for reinventing oneself. If you've a mind to and if you can keep it up convincingly. Some people emigrate more 'honestly' than others and you'll never get the truth. Ultimately who cares ?

By honestly I mean before people just emigrated as a lifestyle choice with, 'I want' as their only motivation.

I wonder if I will get reamed for this post ?

I've always assumed people on here tell the truth because it's pretty much anonymous...

But since you mention it, as it's online, I guess I should be more sceptical.

I tell the truth (and it annoys some people). Therefore, much as I'd love to meet some people on this forum I'm afraid others might want to beat the crap out of me since I don't share their "this is Gods own country" attitude. :D

For those I annoy, trust me, I'm quite nice really. I just whinge about things Oz on here 'cause I can't do it anywhere else! :)

Some people cruise through life doing and achieving little, others push themselves. It all depends how much you put into life, and how much you take out.

Read some of the obituaries in the Telegraph to see what i mean. Or even here in Australia.

Take Malcolm Van Gelder for instance. Look at what this guy did in his lifetime:
  • 1952 Royal Military College middleweight boxing champion.
  • 1958 Became a the ACT’s first Wallaby, scored 2 tries against NZ
  • Played rugby for 4 states – SA, Vic, NSW and ACT
  • Refereed 466 rugby matches in the ACT
  • Scored a try against the All Blacks
  • A graduate in Military Science, Engineering, Economics and Law
  • Fought in the Borneo campaign (Sawrawak during the Indonesian confrontation)
  • Fought in the Malaya Campaign against the communists
  • Fought in the Vietnam War.
  • Spent 2 years in Thailand as an Army Engineer
  • Was at Maralinga for the atomic bomb trials.
  • Retired from the Army as a Lt Colonel
  • Won two AMF Gold Medals for military essays
  • Was a cattle farmer and built a small ‘alternative life-style’ village
  • Was a Solicitor with a small but successful practice.
  • Partied with Russian Generals in Delhi at the time of their Afghanistan War
  • Travelled up the Ganges on a steam ship.
  • Travelled to Katmandu

http://malcolmvangelder.blogspot.com.au/

Or you can read all about him building airfields in Thailand here:

http://www.wasappers.com/documents/D..._Chapter_4.pdf

He packed a fair bit into his life. I goes some might think he was a Walter Mitty if they "met" him on BE. To be honest BE would benefit from a few more like Col Van Gelder.....

Some of us have lived long (well it seems like a bloody long time) and very active lives... I've moved from breaking/reschooling horses and three day eventing to insurance, to accounts work (no I was never an accountant just the idiot who did the work for him) to prestige car delivery, to computer programming, bar work, professional paid politics, personnel and training, practice management through to nursing...where I became a community nurse practitioner.... I've also done odd work here and there... Accompanying minors on international travel, PA to a model and personal shopping for high flyers who were too busy to do it themselves...and I fitted in a teeny weeny bit of volutary work overseas... Summit I'd like to do more of...if it paid well

Back in the day when you just stepped from one job to another with relative ease...and You didnt always need a piece of paper to do the job...

FYI, I do have a HIM, four kids, two hounds from hell, the Byford two and an illegal third known as the australian ferral....and I have had a brain tumour... Also guillaine barre if you're interested.. AND i have an ex husband who I married and divorced (due to him battering the heck out of me...) within 18 months.....I was sent to paris every Easter from the age of 10 to stay with friends of the family...for anything from 3 weeks at a time to 4/6 months when I had glandular fever.... I've owned around 25-30 different cars.. Most of them heaps of shite... Apart from my beloved mark l astra GTE .... I dated a professional footballer in the 80s, met many famous ****wits because my sister was a model and in with the in crowd and did drugs.. Lots of them, I was engaged to a man with serious money from a well known family.. but hit him over the head with a fire iron and threw his video recorder out of a first floor closed window when he asked me to marry him and didnt look like he was taking no for an answer...I did leave home at 16, and until this week have been financially self supporting ever since... Which is why I had to leave my "awfully nice" public school and beg the state school that expelled me at 13 to take me back...but then I dropped out because of finances months later..I jam, quilt and have done cordon bleugh! Cookery... And worked in kitchens whilst studying..I've been a member of the University of the Third age as well as the womens institute .... Studied at further education colleges and university, fulltime, part time and distance.....and turned down a place at cambridge because I became pregnant (medicine and babies dont mix)

And now I am a stranded, marooned worked injury ****ed RN... With a lifetime of memories... And a lot of ****ing time on my hands....

And pretty much what you see is what you get with me...

**** me... Reading that lot I think I should write a book

Well done EDDIE, you have lived an interesting life.

I was surprised going back to my hometown for the first time in 25 years to find some friends STILL in the same job, same GF( we are going to get married one day) drinking in the SAME bar, and had never been out of the UK.

Some people pack a lot in, others sit around watching people do things on TV. I assume they are happy.....

My (blacksmith) Grandfather always used to say.. Three day eventing is for those who dont excell in one particular field...

My riding days are over.. Avascular necrosis thanks to my cushings being too long undiagnosed has done that...

As far as I'm aware, there are three definite and a few others who are more than likely. The husband works with one, the stories are awesome  Apparently his wife (works on the phones for Austar) is on $50 a hour and she is so brilliant she gets called in on public holidays and gets triple time. She also gets first class trips to 'organise' staff in other states and is given $200 a day spending money as well as the flight/accom/food paid. Every single day he has another story, how he remembers this shit is beyond me.
