Whatever speed you decide to travel at on Marmion or the freeway in the left hand lane, there will always be someone that simply must go past ...

It's bred into them. They can't be behind ... it's insane.

I'm up and down Marmion all the time from Mindarie and constantly have tailgaters gnawing their steering wheels off despite me doing 85-90 kph ...

F***ing knobs ... all of them.

Commodore owners with Peter Brock tribute stickers ... don't start me.

I think I must have lived in a parallel Perth for four years. The driving is not worse, just different.

In fact, I found most WA drivers to be pineapples of politeness on the road, always letting me pull out into a queue of traffic with a cheery wave...

There seems to be this inbred thinking of '**** you, you will not get infront of me, even if I have to ram you'. Along with a total disregard for other road users with the constant tailgating, changing lanes across the front of other users, no use of mirrors etc etc.

I had yet another example of this today. On my way to work I'm driving up Wanneroo Road, and there's a truck parked half on the verge and half in the road. So I would need to change lanes to get around. I check my mirror and over the shoulder and it's clear, with another car in the next lane way back. I put on the indicator and check again, this cars still in the same place. As soon as I start to move out, checking the mirrors again this dickhead has accelerated right up to try and stop me. I barely squeezed past the parked truck.

I have experienced more close calls in the year I've been here than in the whole 20+ years of driving in the UK.

So what causes it? Is it the training, or some inbred mentality?

It just seems that there's a total lack of spacial awareness, courtesy and good driving skills.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm still a bit flustered after nearly hitting the back of a parked truck!!!

I have encountered some shocking driving but would like to know one thing. How do you all know what nationality of person is driving? I haven't mastered that yet?

I think I live in the same area as Wookie. The tailgating on Joondalup Drive and Burns Beach Road every day is just frightening. And nearly every time I go round the Connelly Road roundabout with Burns Beach Road, some idiot waits until s/he sees the whites of my eyes (me being in the roundabout) - and then pulls out right in front of me.

I've now taken to drive in the roundabout really slowly in anticipation of the inevitable "puller-outer".

I went so far as downloading the "Code" (forgotten its real name) from the WA Transport website, because I started to wonder whether the rule was different here. But no, it's the same rule as in the UK (person coming from the right has right-of-way).

You can just tell.

Seriously, the driving habits described in this thread are so marked and prevalent in Perth that it can't simply be ascribed to the minority of incomers in the population.

But I do think many incomers adopt the local habits in an effort to fit in. These driving habits are obviously not unique to WA, but they strongly characterize WA driving. That's my scientific analysis, anyway.

The roads here are wider than in the UK, so why motorists drive/sway into the cycle lanes?

Best to keep idiots in front of you where they can't crash into you.

The one that gets me is the drivers that tailgate you but don't want to pass. What the **** is that all about?

In Sydney its "JET PILOT"

Nearly lost the front bumper to a Bogan P plater pulling out yesterday. She would not wait and had been swerving in and out of the traffic for over 3k's. More interested in getting their next bottle of Bundy than watching where they are going.
