Ah... double glazing. We fitted it to both our houses in the UK- most it came to was £8k. Over here they quoted us $68k for about 20 windows!!!!

It's Sydenham to be precise. Debating whether to go home to 'supervise' or risk getting them done from here.

The speed they do it, you can easily do it with tenants in situ. Might not be the best idea to do it in the middle of winter though...

You will need to do some make good and mend on the decorating - the double glazing company won't do much past making sure the window is fitted. Depends on how things are installed, but not usually too much decorating to do.

You will do better if you can beat down the company on price (eg be there). Depending on demand you can knock them down - so pick the right time of year. The rough base to their costing is £300 per 'frame' (eg bay windows are multiple frames), with extras on for complication, and them wanting fatter profits. You tend to get a better deal with the local (not big) companies.

Now we just need equivalent standards/prices in Australia....

When ours was done, there was no tenants in the flat, but the place was covered in red brick/plaster dust. Dont know if the window fitters saw the place was empty and therefore were careless with making a mess. Besides this powder dust, we had to do a bit of filling next to the windows to make good. Luckily we only needed to paint the window recesses around every window, so did not have to match the paint a 100%.

You will be so glad you did this though, its the best thing to do for a rental property.

One of life's bizarre experiences....

I bought a brand new home in the UK which was, obviously, doubled glazed throughout. We had been in the new house about an hour when we got our very first knock on the door..... it was a double glazing salesman trying to sell me replacement windows !!
They were still building the house next door FFS !!
