UK priest says its OK to Shoplift
A priest in the Uk says its OK for the poor to shoplift as a way to beat the recession as long as its from large profitable businesses.
What do you think of that?
What about all the charities that give away free food, does anyone need to steal food to survive these days? Most shoplifers go after expensive consumer goods and designer cloths not food or essentials.

He had to be Anglican. These are the guys that just put a billboard up depicting Mary & Joseph in bed with the caption: "Poor Joseph. God is a hard act to follow."
What a bunch of losers.

It's an interesting one though. As, from what I understand you take an oath and swear on the bible in a court of law in the UK still. Therefore wouldn't a defendant facing shoplifting charges be able to use as a defence that God told him to do it? After all priests are God's messengers, are they not?

Yes, and I bet that it doesn't mention that God then goes on to become the ultimate absent father does it?

He doesn't really say it's 'OK' does he? He says it's preferable to robbery or prostitution.

Hmmm large stores are an OK Target. Tell that to all the staff who lost their Job at Woolies in the UK.
Having worked for said large faceless multinationals. You stand a better chance of getting caught and a pretty much a sure chance of charges being laid against you. Not to mention increased security costs are reflected in shop prices.
Once you decide to go "Straight" that theft conviction is not washed away. Would you hire someone with a theft conviction?
Anyway this priest is a twat for even walking down this path.
Jesus did not say blessed are the poor for they are licensed to shoplift from those that can afford it.

He told parishioners it would not break the eighth commandment 'thou shalt not steal' because it 'is permissible for those who are in desperate situations to take food that they might not starve'.
He is using a fair crack of weasel words
Let my words not be misrepresented as a simplistic call for people to shoplift.
Its like opening the field gates and telling the sheep not to leave?

Yes this is true,I however knew several Male well built shoplifters who would walk into a shop, place the items in a bag in front of staff and walk out.
They never threatened violence but as a 6-7 stone whip of a shop girl on minimum wage are you going to stop them?

Well, considering the church is a large multinational corporation I guess said priest would be ok with the poor helping themselves to the cash from the donation box, eh?

I understand where the priest is coming from, and you do need to read his comments in context. I tend to agree with him. But that said I think most shoplifters do not steal food and if they do, often they could have actually paid for it. What the article really points to is that there are those in UK who are not getting the level of government assistance they need to get by on while out of work, and minimum wage is too low.
