Can someone please explain the allocation of regional seats to me? Don't understand why a party who only won 15 constituencies can get 24 of the regional seats and the one with around 50 constituencies gets less than 20.

They get allocated seats based on the % of votes they got in that region, but it also takes into account the first past the post seats already won - it effectively tries to make the final number of seats from that region closer to the %.

In the past I've voted for parties I don't actually like to try and minimise the number of SNP MSPs elected.

Thankyou! So am I right in thinking that this system was put in place by the Westminster government in an attempt to prevent any one party from gaining an overall majority?

Nope, the ones banging the drum in favour are the ones that wouldn't have a snowflakes chance in hell of getting elected any other way
