It's the FSA that's announced this, and the announcement is here.

"The Financial Services Authority (FSA) has today increased the compensation limit for bank deposits from £35,000 up to a total of £50,000 for each customer's claim. This increase applies from Tuesday 7 October 2008.

Customers with joint accounts will be eligible to claim up to £100,000."

Cheers

This makes me laugh, the same as the Irish banks offering 100% cover. It just wouldn't happen because if people did need to claim it would cost trillions. The only way for the government to honour the promise would be to print the money.

The might as well write "***** You!" over the queen's head on the banknotes as they hand them out to you.

Another example of the ZanuLabour government lying to the people.

It is an insurance based scheme that has been around for years.....it is nothing to do with New Labour.

So if the guarantees need to be redeemed all the underwriters go bust, the govt have to step in either way, to prop up the insurers or pay out the account holders. They'd have to print the money in any event.

Better that than lose the lot.....and Australia's economy looks a bit shaky as well....seems like it is not immune after all.

Agreed, definite "heads in the sand" in Aus at the moment.

Commodities crashing in price, in fact, I'm even tempted to have a dabble on BHP but everything is too irrational at the mo. Might just sit it out and wait for "stability" whenever that might come...

Indeed

I am stuck with a large pot of money spread over a number of UK and Australian banks.

I am tempted to transfer some more, given the exchange rate, but want to be sure things are more stable than they are now.

Has anyone said the Aus economy is immune? I've seen people say it'll fare better than the UK but I've not seen anyone say that it will not be affected by all this.
