I got something similar a few months ago and smiled at all the good and some bad memories and thought "how very true"
I can understand why some thimgs have had to change by law .......... I would no longer be allowed to fall asleep in the back of the station wagon with the dog on a long car journey for example .... but I can't see why some schools have decided to do away with sports day ??????

The school my kids were at in UK did away with the traditional sports day and made it into team events. The thinking was that it would make them all better team players and that it wouldn't be the same people winning everything every year. I think there is a bit of logic to that. But in the schools where they don't have ANY competitive sport the reasoning is a bit bizzarre (to me anyway) if I remember rightly it is so that the poor little ones who don't win don't feel like losers! FFS in the real world they need to know they can't be good at everything and that they need to put in some effort to win stuff, it is not going to be handed to them on a plate!

Anyway, back to the original thing of feeling old at what technology we have today, how about this for feeling old.

We took the kids to Bletchley Park (home of the enigma machine) before we left UK, in there is a little museum showing how far communication has come. While looking round Steve & I spotted the machines we had been taught to use in Trade Training at Catterick in the early 80's! OMG we nearly died, the kids thought it hilarious that stuff we used to use was old enough to be in a museum!

The trouble with a lot of kids they don't know how to handle failure neither a lot of them do not know how to handle someone else’s achievements I mean gee we not all good at everything in life and so we should be teaching our kids that, but it all boils down to the parents as we are their role models!

Remember sherbet dib dabs - oooooohhhhh... don't know if they are still around but you can't get them in oz but I did find black jacks the other day yummy!!! And tizer but it wasn’t the same or is it I just remember it differently?

Hi

Have you looked in the British lolly shops, I am sure I saw Sherbet Dib Dabs in there when I looked.

I remember playing a computer game at school on the BBC computer they had ....

at 12.00 when the lunch bell went we (all the tough 5th years slapping lesser pupils out the way) charged into the computer room and started to load up our game ... Chuckie Egg, was in a tape player and took 45 minutes to load!! floppy 7" disc was way too advanced back then!!

after lunch we then rushed back to get exactly 5 minutes of playing time of this crap game on a black screen with green luminous graphics before the end of lunchbreak.

and around 1992 I got a Motorola car phone installed. I was 18, had a Ford Escort 1.8 Ghia in black and decided that the carphone was a must!! 800 quid later it was fully installed, ariel fixed to the back screen and brick size handpiece ready to be used ..... which wasnt often as the coverage was horrendous and everytime you drove past a small bush the signal was lost. But it wasnt about using it ..... it was about HAVING it LOL!

and I agree with the post about video games and 1000 tv channels ..... our kids have not and will not be getting any computer games at home. Jeez - when I look at families thinking they cant even manage a road trip or flight without their kids attached to a Nintendo DS .... what a load of crap. Rather than being a parent and talking with your kids, keeping them amused, interacting with them etc, its so much easier to plug them into a video game, nice cop out!

I've packed loads if sticker books, jigsaws, etc for the kids to do on our flights on Saturday. I'm hoping it will keep them quite & amused so that I can play on my DS uninterrupted for a while

You've just described me! but then I never claimed to be super-mum, Being on my own with the kids 24/7 is exhausting. I need a break. Anyone fancy baby-sitting for a couple of weeks?

Me too mate, and I'm not on my own, but who on earth wants to travel for 10 hours in a car with 3 older kids arguiing for 9.5 hours of it?

I am not super mum either, and I don't care who knows iot.

We are all different, and just because we had a dvd player in the back of the care for trips to the continent does not mean I don't care about my kids!

Well we're moving to Oz to hopefully give our kids a better quality of life so I don't think a few hours on a long journey with a DS or something will do much harm. I have my younger 2 24/7 so plenty of time to talk to them & interact Can you tell I'm no super mummy either? I need a break some times!!

I don't think I was super child - I don't think I'm a super Mummy and I know I am not always a super adult ..............

but I'm not bad either and whilst there is still room for improvement I don't think I've done too badly in any of the above three.

Finding a Mum that never ever needs a break from home and kids is like getting the proverbial blood from a stone.

Well done to all the Mums - especially those that in the middle of being a Mum, have upped sticks or are about to and have dealt with years of paperwork - packing - unpacking - setting up home - saving and spending thousands etc etc etc
- hours of gut renching decisions and doubts and tears and joy ......... and are still being a good Mum.
