Puffing Billy. Even if you're not into steam trains. Take it to Lakeside, getting off at the first stop is a little lame, don't go all the way to Gembrook unless you really like stream trains. A drive around the Dandenongs including Sky High for a view over to the city and Grants Picnic Ground where wild birds will feed from you hand (assuming you've got bird seed). The penguins as mentioned by someone above. Bring warm clothes for that at any time of the year. An alternative is the aquarium which has King Penguins and Gentoo Penguins (I think). Aquarium is expensive. The Golden Mile. A walk around Melbourne streets which takes you to some fascinating buildings and gives a good feel for the town. You can get a guide from the Immigration Museum where the tour starts. The Eureka tower or the Rialto tower for a high point view over the city and the bay. The MCG tour is very good, even if you're not that into sports. Not been to the sports museum but its there as well. A pint or a pot in the Mitre pub. A walk along the river. Away from the city is the Great Ocean Rd. Within a short distance are loads and loads of wineries. City circle tram. Shrine of Remembrance, the Domain and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Vic Market (if you like that sort of thing). |

Re: Things to do whilst visiting Melbourne
The city circle tram is wonderful, mainly because it's free. You do get some good views from it though.
However, avoid lunchtime unless you like playing sardines with 1,000,000 students. :) |
