Download Etax2008 from http://www.ato.gov.au/
It is completely, 100%, totally idiot proof.

I've been wondering do I need to visit one of those booths in the shopping centre or just do it myself on the ATO website?

If it is a straightforward return (ie you paid the tax, have no wonderful other investments or businesses raking in millions) then just download the software to your computer and fill in the boxes. They even have a self filling capacity for some of the items these days. It really isnt a big deal even though it does have a sword of Damocles type feel to it - if you get all your claim stuff organized before hand it can be done very quickly. You dont have to do it until 31 October so you can take your time.

As the others have stated if it is a straight forward tax return do it yourself, if it is rather more complex.....use an agent!!
