Just to clear it up for everyone reading, not many people would use the princes highway as a method of travelling between Sydney and Melbourne directly.... It's a Holiday, Coastal, Tourist route... The far more boring yet direct hume is the main route.

Yup! Go the Hume and get all the boredom over in a day!

One way of saying it:
if you choose to do it, the Princes, do it once but make sure you are a tourist..

There is an amazing tourist drive called Grand ridge off to Melbourne's Se...but this would entail yet more hours if not days...because it is a diversion of the Prince's

There are all sorts of routes really if you are a tourist! Coming down through the Alps is interesting (in summer!)

Canberrians would know some if not all about diversions around the Hume...do I have my geography right?

we did the inland journey on the move to Melbourne from Sydney and went through the snowies and bright etc really beautiful country but we took a week to do that and saw some awesome scenery.

On our move back to Sydney we came via the coast roads going via lakes entrance Eden and Tathra with a few days at Jervis bay a truly stunning route.
