Default Suburb shopping in Perth!

Hi Everyone.
We are new to this site and not quite sure if this is the right place to ask these questions, so bare with us!

We are a family of 4 (37,30,2,1) and we are wanting to move from our lovely home in Poole, Dorset to an even more lovely home in Perth. My hubby is an electrician and has his vetassess practical test in August. I am a photographer and we have a girl and a boy. Its been a huge decision, as you know, and therefore we are visiting Perth in January to have a look around and decide where we would like to start our new life.

I have been looking at different rental sites and was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is at all possible to rent a house for 2 weeks and if so, if you have any recommendations?

We would like to rent in either Quinns Rock, Mindaree, Clarkson or somewhere around there.

Also, if anyone has any good advice for us or want to share your experiences please do!

Many thanks,
Anja and Stuart

Hi, many other suburbs on stayz.com.au and the rental sites apart from Quinns, Mindarie and Clarkson, so keep your options open. Your kids are a bit young yet, but time flies and you will soon need to think about schools or commuting distances.

We dont know much about the areas, so we just chose the ones we have heard of.

Any suggestions/recommendations/pros and cons are more than welcome.

Thank you

For a holiday, those suburbs (although nice) are quite far North. You could consider looking at something a bit closer to the city so you can have easy access NOR, SOR and out to the hills.

That said, Clarkson does have a train station with direct links into the city but if you are driving it is a fair bit North.

I'd steer clear of Clarkson if I were you.

Why, what's Clarkson like? Would I like it?

Is it a bit seedy, with lots of alkies lying in the gutter?

Yes it is. It's full of deroes and people walking around swigging fortified wine out of bottles.

That's where you go during the day isn't it - not posh rounds of golf, but rather head to Clarkson for a day of 'normality'!

We just moved from Clarkson a year ago. All the deros have now migrated north.

(Except when we visit the old neighbours)

Actually, Clarkson isn't all that bad. Of course it's not Poole Dorset, but unless you're willing to spend >$1million on a house you're not going to find much to compare. Then again, it's Perth, so you aren't going to find anything comparable anyway.

On that stayz website, look for listings under Duncraig, Hillarys, Sorrento, North Beach, Trigg, Karrinyup to get you started. There's quite a few under Scarborough, but you have to be careful you don't end up with an ocean view overlooking a busy highway. If you do email any places, see if you can get the street address so that we can give you more detailed info.

Closer in, Subiaco, Claremont, Nedlands are other options and may not be as expensive as you'd expect. In January, it would be nice to be near the coastal suburbs above, or the river suburbs like Claremont or Nedlands. Much better bus and/or train services, cafes and smaller local shopping centres. Perth has a lot of parks dotted around, and with kids it's great to have a spot of grass and a playground to take them to, as a lot of newer rental places only have a small courtyard and in summer it's like an oven out there.

Let us know how you get on and we can give you more details of particular areas.
