OK, given the current financial climate, hands up who thinks we need 12 new submarines?
There are a couple of positives, the money is likely to be spent in Europe or the US, so it will be a small boost to the economies there, which could help the world to get back into financial order (an astute move by Mr Rudd, I have also heard that he is thinking of extending the $950 child grant to China, just to help stimulate the economy of our leading trading partner....).
Secondly, according to the ABC "The navy also needs to overcome a shortage of crew."
Now this may appeal to those of you who are coming over without jobs, and may provide an alternative to shelf stacking in Coles. Please send any spare seamen to Parliament House, Canberra.

"There's no such thing as spare seamen, they should all be accounted for..."
Do you mean in a Brian Hanrahan Falklandsesque "I counted them all out, and I've counted them all back in" kind of way?
