Sorry for the delay Zoe - been hibernating but now the sun has come out (in UK) I am about again :) My dreams are Brisbane but hubby very worried about it all and not sure if this dream will come true. Trying to be really cool and give him time. Really hard as my kids (2: 10 and nearly 13) really want to go too! Ah well...what will be will be. My ideal timeline would be to be there by September 2009 but who knows.
Good luck with the interview, when is it -or was it??? You will be fine. When I was in Oz and looked around a few hospitals they were REALLY friendly and chatty and wanted to know everything but in a nice way and then offered me jobs!!! I wasn't even qualified!!! Just stay chilled. FYI I was told by them and the Head of Midwifery at my uni that the midwives in Oz qualify with less training than we get so you should be great!
Anyone know how long the application to QLD equivalent of NMC registration lasts? Was thinking of applying for that so that IF hubby says OK let's do it that I am as prepared as I can be and just apply for jobs. Any help gratefully received.
Thanks and GOOD LUCK all you lovely nurses and midwives, NHS loss is definitely OZ'z gain!!!! Been qualified 8 months and already getting dragged down! I LOVE being a midwife -I think it is one of the most privileged jobs in the world. I love caring for women in labour and helping them make the transition to motherhood but it's all the other crap. Need to get out of this system:( Sorry didn't mean to go off on one AAAGGGHHH!

OKay then. I'm Tracie and have been here in Perth since Nov 06. Loving it here but must admit the one thing I miss is my job. I worked in Infectious Diseases in Manchester and loved it. Here I work in a much smaller unit (10 patients) and find nursing a lot more mundane then I did. I still enjoy it but just cant belive how much some Aus nurses will act as Dr's hand maids! I think change is coming but it will take time.
I had an interview yesterday for a new job in drugs and alcohol, (she types drinking a bottle of wine!!!). Seemed like a really interesting place so hopefully it will turn out a good move:)

Hiya
I am a UK New Grad midwife currently working at wellington and really not enjoying my experiences. I have applied to Royal Melbourne just waiting for references but sounds quite positive:thumbsup:
If there are any other midwives that work at the Royal and could just let me know what its like, I appreciate any comments.
Thanks:D

Hi Girls,

Anyone from Royal Brisbane out there? I'm a midwife, but I've been working in IVF for the last 3 years here, so been out of the loop a wee bit! I am starting to "fret" over how I will cope with the different working regimes and if I will remember it all.
Just slightly apprehensive about going back to my old job!

Will really appreciate any advice

P.S I start on the 12 Oct

There are quite a few differences in Mdwifery between here and the UK. In the private sector it is more Obstetric lead care where C sections are more common (pay for it all) and there is a major major lack of home births (in queensland before anyone jumps around). There are only a handful of independant midwives here doing home births as they are not covered on health insurance etc. Public hospitals tend to be more Midwife driven and there are a few more birthing centres opening up. There's a few midwives working in your area who would be able to share some more.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Ginny

Auxilary nursing or Midwifery Assistant!!!

Hi

I am an Auxilary nurse and have worked on Gynaecology for 4 years.

I just wondered if they have the same in oz, Auxilariy nurses or midwifery assistants as i would love to carry on when i move there next year.

I hope to do my midwifery degree at some point over the next few years, but am quite happy as i am at the mo.

Any advice or comments would be great.

Mandy

The other nurse threads seemed to die a death so I stopped looking on them. This is going great guns!!

I am a Midwife who has been on a validation trip to Perth. Have employment in a small hospital (when I eventually get there!)
Went to visit and they were FABULOUS! The staff were really friendly and I can't wait to start.:)

hi all. I have a bit of a dilemma in that I have been an icu/hdu/ccu nurse for years but also qualified as a midwife 18 months ago.
is it possible to do both in oz as I am managing to do both now?
