Specsavers....
Have arrived in Australia
Just been talking to the sales lady in the one near me and she said they have bought out all the Vision stores and that there will be 120 specsavers shops opening across Australia within the next few months.
So good news for those of us who wear specs - you can buy complete pairs for as little as $99 and they will have the buy one get your second pair free offers available as well

Re: Specsavers....
I tried them out already Wendy, I was excited when I first saw them as well. Went down to the Collins street branch here in Melbourne. No cheaper for my specialist 1.74 hiindex multifocals thats for sure. They still came in at over Aud 740 for the lenses and 250 bucks for the frames. Sure you can get two pairs, However I can get one pair with a better choice of frames from my local opt with the same lenses at 720 bucks. So with specsavers sure I get two pairs, but I may not want to pay the extra 280 bucks for a extra pair of glasses I may not need.

Are the UK ones any better for prices on specialist specs? (I've always bought the cheapy ones so don't know ).

Re: Specsavers....
There was thread a few moons back (that I can't find despite a fair bit of searching) that extolled the virtues of buying the things over t'internet (i.e. provide a perscription to some off-shore company ... I believe the recommended one was in the UK ... and they make them up and post 'em out).
Seemed to make sense to me at the time and was a massive saving over anything bought here.
Would probably only work with 'simple' cases (I guess...) but the prospect of going frame shopping locally then buying exactly the same thing dirt-cheap on-line appealed to me.
If anyone could point me to the thread then that would be dandy as my glasses are due for an update.

Having worked in the industry I wonder how Luxottica will react. Luxottica own OPSM, Budget Eyewear and Laubman and Pank (as well as Sunglass Hut).
A few years ago OPSM had OPSM express with onsite lens grinding but the staff costs were considered too large and the facility was cut. It was also found that consumers had a perception that lenses that took days to supply are more expensive and so the consumer could be charged more.
Luxottica have over 35% of the market with no other competitor anywhere near the size. Specsavers will bring competition.
