Gold should not be measured against dollars, it needs to be measured against another asset class. For example, the same amount of gold would buy a barrel of oil today as it would 50 years ago.

Gold is not an inflation hedge, it's a crisis hedge. Not to decry that - especially nowadays when the *real* GFC has yet to be seen - but holding gold is not without costs or risks.
Nothing is without cost or risk.

Disingenuous - gold is being spruiked as a hedge against inflation, which is arguable.

The problem with measuring it with a dollar value is government price manipulation.

Sweeping generalisation without substance I'm afraid.
Self managed funds can be ok and depending on your portfolio split some have done fine. If you were poorly advised and didn't do your own research, then you invested unwisely. This has nothing to do with super, you could make that mistake in any investment i.e. putting all your egg sin one basket.
The tie in is a drawback but with OP aged 47 a strategy of a 13 year investment is not unreasonable for a robust return.

As you mentioned above, self managed is the key but how many people self-manage? The majority of punters do not and that means it is left to fund managers gouging the super with their fees and commissions. Tie in is a massive drawback and so is the fact it is compulsory. And, if the markets take a hit, so does the super. Look what happened to super with the GFC and we haven't even had round two yet.

If you have a little money you want to invest, please see someone qualified to provide advice and do some basic research yourself as opposed to relying on any advice from a chat forum. It's your hard earned money and you don;t want to see it diappear by following the advice from well meaning but unqualified people with investment strategies that may or may not have worked for them.

If you read the thread she does say she intends to speak to a financial advisor, the thread is just to get some ideas.

I get ya

Margaret....
one good site for ideas and a bits of good financial views and articles relating to the UK is Fool.com
Might be worth having a look at it now and then for ideas.
