Depends on what you mean by "as bad".

The class system isn't as old as the Uk so has not evolved in the same way. There is still a huge gap between rich and poor.

Also, there is a big gap between life expectancy for indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.

True there is a big gap and huge contribution to that is their own doing ie, Drug and solvent abuse, Alcohol Abuse. This is also present with the Non-indigenous Australians. No one forced these Indigenous & non-indigenous Australians to take this lifestyle

It depends on what you mean by class. If you mean an endless and ultimately irrelevant set of rules about whether you cut the edges off sandwiches, then that's one thing.

But if you're actually talking about who in a society has the money and power, and how that changes who is goes to work and who goes to CentreLink, who goes on safari and who goes to prison, who goes to uni and who ends up in hospital, then that's completely different.

IMO, it's the second that's more interesting.

Also, there definitely is a snooty part of Australian society, and they're very clear about sending messages to each other to identify themselves. Anyone who says there isn't class (in the first sense) is either lying or just hasn't picked up on the signals.

Edit: meanwhile, Rudd should be pleased that Australia makes the second tier, and Brown should be pleased that he's not scrabbling around next to him. I loved the juxtaposition of the sentences about him flying in, and then the big protests, as if they were linked. Yeah, yeah, Aussie media, the country that everyone's talking about is definitely Australia!
